I have been asked by my friend to make a "tool" cake for a friend of hers who is a mechanic. I thought about doing fondant cut-outs of tools, or something to that effect.
Does anybody have any ideas as to where I can get designs from to use to cut-out the fondant shapes?
Any help would really be appreciated.
maybe print out pictures of actual tools...saw, hammer and so forth...then just trace and cut would be my suggestion.
I love the trace and cut method...as I am sooo not artistic.
I have seen candy molds that are of tools. I don't know if you could put fondant in them and then let them dry?????? I really haven't worked with fondant. Just a thought.

Well, the first thing that I thought of was maybe making two cakes shaped like a lug nut (bolt) & a wrench? You could do it using 8 or 10 inch rounds then flattening (by carving) off the sides to make bolts, making 6 sides. Then do basically the same for the wrench depending on whether you made an open ended wrench or socket. Maybe cover them in fondant w/ silver luster dust & black accents. Hope this helps.
As far as shapes of tools.. This may sound crazy.. but as a mom of 3 boys ... try hunting down a Bob the Builder coloring book. LOL Or even a little kids picture book. The shapes would be simple to follow
I did a tool box cake and used 'tools' from the dollar store. The kids got a kick out of them because they could play withthem afterwards. I also used a chocolate mold for the wrenches and dusted those with silver lustre dust. You could use the chocolate mold with fondant as well just dust the mold well with powdered sugar or cornstarch and press it in.
Take a look in the gallery, there are some other tool cakes and some even handmade the tools as well!
You can make your own molds of real tools. Easy to do. Make the mold then press fondant into them, or pour chocolate, or sugar.

That is a great link, thanks cigarherb!
Quick question? Do y'all think that I could take a piece of fondant, tghen press a tool down into it to form the shape, let it dry, then fill it with chocolate and put it in the freezer to harden? Just a thought, I'm not sure if it will work!
