do you eat the fondant on your cakes? i made a cake for thanksgiving and it was covered in fondant. it was spice cake with vanilla buttercream.
the cake was cut and everyone, myself included, just ate the cake and buttercream. i even used pettinice which doesn't taste bad at all. yet, we all scraped the cake away from the fondant and left the fondant on the plate. i have no desire to eat the fondant.
now, i know its a matter of taste, but i find that most people leave it on the plate.
my issue with this is making fondant cakes for children. i love the look of the figures and the wonderful things you can do with fondant. but, i really don't think a child would enjoy the taste as much as they would buttercream.
i've asked friends and family their take on this and they say that the kids won't care as long as they're eating something fun and colorful.

does anyone else have an issue with this?

My kids won't touch the fondant icing. They peel it away like a skin and eat the cake and the BC. DH does too. I usually try a bite but it's sort of like chewing gum that is sweet and dissolves! icon_smile.gif

My Course III Wilton class just had me do a package cake and my first fondant rose. We all peeled it away like a skin. Seems like a lot of trouble yes, but it sure makes a beautiful cake and oh the possibilities. I love the accents and details you can add to you cakes with Fondant. I love Debbie Brown's cakes. I bought two of her books because they show so many options.

I'm anxious to try the MMF fondant recipe from here at CC everyone say's it's better than Wilton's by far. I also want to try the Rolled Butter Cream. Love to hear what everyone else says!

I use SatinIce, and I hand-roll it to about 1/8 inch thick. It does not harden as quickly as some rolled fondants do, and it is quite tasty. We all eat this brand of fondant in my family, as long as I roll it thin. I wish I had a fondant sheeter, I would then roll it to about 1/16 inch thick. Then it would be perfect.

We do. The MMF we do anyway. The wilton is horrible but all of my family that has tried my fondant cakes love it.

I order the 20 lb buckets from Pfeil and Holing in Long Island City, NY. Their website is

www.cakedeco.com

I live in PA, so I get my shipment within 2 days, if I call before 10 AM. I see you live in STL, so it may take a day or two longer. Shipping is not that expensive for me, I think it's around $15, so altogether, it costs about $70 for 20 lbs, which is very reasonable for that brand. It is certified Kosher, and of the three major brands that are Kosher, this is the one that I prefer.

Does anyone out there know a vendor that sells SatinIce in the St. Louis area?

My youngest munchkin LOVES it. Even the Wilton stuff that I add candy flavoring too. He will sit and ask for "tastes" of it while I'm making decorations, thinking the different colors are differnt flavors, or so he claims icon_wink.gif. I too found the texture kind of funny but have grown accostomed to it, if it's thin enough. My DH and older boy HATE it, they peel and toss, as do the extended family. The only thing they have come close to eating with the cake is rolled buttercream, but even that was a texture thing for most.

Just my two cents thumbs_up.gif

I've been thinking about giving the SatinIce a try. Also, some people on here recommended FondX. So, I might try that too. I've tried the MMF which also doesn't taste bad, but I find it gets soft easily and things tend to droop a bit.

I just feel like the marshmellow-like taste doesn't compliment every cake. For instance, it tasted a little strange with the spice cake. But, it might be better with a chocolate cake.

I don't know. I do love all the things you can do with fondant. It gives such a nice smooth finish to the cake.
Smoothing buttercream is a talent in itself.... one I have to work on. icon_rolleyes.gificon_smile.gif

Fondant is a subject that can be debated on this forum all day. Believe me, there are tons of threads asking which brand is best.

You really should try to get small containers of each brand you want to try, and go from there. There are so many brands to choose from, and I have only tried a few -- Wilton, Pettinice, FondX, and SatinIce, so I can only go by my experience.

Also, there are some rolled fondant recipes online (not just MMF) that you might want to try. Just give it a Google, and see what you can make with the ingredients that are available to you where you live.

I don't eat it, but my daughter LOVES it. I went out of town last weekend and she was asking my husband for some fondant to snack on. Also, my friends kids all think mmf is wonderful.

Paula - You can buy Satin Ice brand at Sallie's shop on Manchester Rd. in Manchester, just about a block west of 141. I think it's $9.99. I also shop at Karen Ann's on Watson, but not sure about the SatinIce. By the way, I just sent you a PM - neighbor!

I only eat it for testing purposes. (To see if i got it te right flavor, if chocolatey enough, if the texture is right, what happens if you eat it before the everclear dries, etc). I hardly ever eat it on the cake myself. The only time I will eat it along with the cake is if it's chocolate fondant and cake.

(ok, and the pumpkin fondant too. it melted in your mouth.)

Another vote here for SatinIce. Although, that's the only other kind other than Wilton that I have tried.

And what Exactly does happen if you eat it before the Everclear dries? icon_twisted.gificon_confused.gificon_lol.gif

I don't eat it on the cake, but I've had kids fight for "the marshmallow stuff." Kids up to 33. They all love the bc, but can't get enough mmf and rbc. Go figure.

I only eat the fondant that I make myself. I tried Satinice fondant, it does taste better tham Wilton but it was still too sweet for me. The MMF tasted better because I could add a little salt while I mix it. It also remains softer and absorbes the buttercream flavor.
I would like to try Cocopan fondant. Has anyone tried that? Does it taste good?

I think that fondant and MMF are yucky. I'm a buttercream lover....especially the only-butter kind. I do use the 1/2 crisco and 1/2 bc for a lot of decorating so that it holds better, but I also love to use just butter.

I'm trying to practice smoothing buttercream so that it looks as much like fondant as possible, but tastes better. I want to obtain the reputation for fondant-looking buttercream. Is this even possible? I'm willing to try.

I've had mixed reactions to it - my mom hates it - but I think it's a texture thing with her. I love it. I'll eat blobs of it when I'm making stuff - but I love chewey stuff - gummy bears, licorice, bagels, anything with a good "chew" to it..... so I enjoy it. I've found a couple other people that really liked the rolled buttercream and will eat the fondant but then I have others who have had one bad experience with it (wilton fondant) and are afraid to try anything else w/ fondant on it........ I personally like to eat it with the cake as it kinda "melts" into the buttercream in my opinion - but I understand people not wanting to eat it b/c of the "texture". Or if they've only had Wilton....... that would turn anyone off!
