So I finished and delivered the 2 tier yellow cake with pink polka dots in my photos. She wanted it to be like the one at the Bonbonerie. Their's is a one tier cake. To feed 50 people like she wanted, they would have made a 14 in round for $110 and charged $38 to deliver it to the site. I made a 10in round and a 12 in round, charged her $86 for it and charged $15 to deliver it.

The cake on the bakery's website was yellow with pink dots, red ribbon bows, and a ruffle around the bottom.

I always give an eval form to my customers. She very nicely filled it out, and gave me rave reviews, which I think is great! Two things made me raise my eyebrows, though. She said I was expensive! I gave her almost twice as much cake for a savings of $47, and I'm expensive????

Also, she said that pink ribbon bows would have been better than red. Hello??? In the picture you sent me, it had red ribbon bows! No mention of changing that in any of our emails.

Anybody else think this strange?

Some people just can't not be gracious. (I'd be interested to know if she becomes a return customer. Bet she does.)

It has been my experience that the weirdest customers you can possibly imagine will be your best customers! I had one lady for years ordering cakes from me -- complaining all the way! "Too expensive..." (I gave her price cuts for more than one cake in an order.) "Buttercream too sweet..." (I made her sign an order form with the phrase 'recipes cannot be altered'...) etc. etc. She was a strange one allright, but one of my best customers. Go figure!

Actually I'm still wondering about the woman I gave a wedding cake consultation to a month ago who informed me "you just don't understand, I want a six-foot (yes, 6 foot!! icon_surprised.gif ) wedding cake and I don't want to pay for it." Well, I do appreciate her honesty -- but it seems I'm now booked on that weekend... icon_confused.gif

bobwonderbuns-

That's hilarious! Maybe she just had a dry sense of humor. Wonder why she never got back to you? Maybe she had to settle for a lesser baker.....

I didn't mean to appear ungrateful for the great things she said about me, she said the cake tasted great. I just was scratching my head about those things....it would be interesting to see if she comes back.

She not only didn't want to pay for it, she had shot down every design style I suggested. She at one point wanted a cake that looked like the one Dr. Phil's son had, with "petals" of fondant going up the sides of the cake -- I told her I couldn't do that with buttercream because it's creamy and smears on the cake but she was not going to pay for fondant! (You should have heard her squawk about the cost of cake dummies when I offered that as an option to increase the height of the cake!) She told me this wedding had a full dessert buffet so she only needed cake for 350 people yet INSISTED on this 6 foot monster and refused dummies. I don't know, I told her to shop around (knowing) she will soon be in for a serious reality check! I talked to another cake designer who mentioned that this is the type of person who would find flaws and try to get their money back after the wedding so I've decided that I'm busy that weekend! Personally I was quite offended at her stingy attitude in light of the fact we were sitting in her 10,000 square foot mansion in a very ritzy area of town!

I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm ranting and raving or badmouthing her -- I'm not. I'm simply shocked at the ridiculous nature of that entire consultation. It's one thing to hear about a situation like that, it's quite another to have someone with a straight face say something like that to you directly. Sometimes people just never cease to amaze me. thumbsdown.gif

On the rare occasions that I've had problems with pricing or money from a customer, it has always (ALWAYS!) been from those who appear to "have it". People "with money" are the worst about expecting to get something for nothing. But then again, maybe that's why they have it and we don't! icon_wink.gif

My fellow CC-caterers will appreciate this one. I catered a wedding - cake and finger foods. While waiting for the couple to arrive, one of the guests came into the kitchen to see if there was any coffee. I told her the bride didnt' order coffee. She said to me, "Oh. Well, when I do these things things I always bring a little of everything, just in case."

Oh right. Every caterer I know will bring their coffee pot, cups, cream, sugar, stirrers, coffee, and make a pot of coffee just in case there is somebody who might maybe want *A* cup of coffee that no one paid for! Obviously YOU dont' do this for a living, chic!

I'm not your Aunt Sally who does this as a hobby because she's seen all of the Oprah and Dr. Phil reruns. I do this to pay my mortgage and feed my kids.

Dumba$$!

Some people aren't happy unless they have something to complain about. Why in the world she would mention those two petty details is beyond me. Especially when you gave her exactly what SHE ordered (with pictures to prove it) and for LESS money than she would have paid elsewhere!
I know your cake was just as she ordered, she enjoyed the heck out of it and 9 chances out of 10, she is going to be a repeat customer and she'll bring others on board as well.

I heard from her today. She wanted to let me know it was ok to destroy her equipment deposit check. She then went on to rave about the cake: how good it tasted, how nice it looked. She really was very nice.

Maybe she will be a repeat customer, that'd be fine with me. I just thought those things were pretty funny. I guess every business has those moments, when you really are pleased, but you just sorta scratch your head, saying "What just happened?"
