I want to make a pulled sugar star for the top of the Nativity cake I'm making. Can anyone give me any help with this?

I have never seen any that are pulled, I should think it would be very difficult to get them all even. Are you sure you aren't thinking of poured or cast sugar? That wouldn't be too difficult. You could lightly oil a piece of foilwrap, put metal star shape cutters on the foil and pour the sugar into the cutters. (oil the inside of the cutters as well) You would have to be sure the cutters were really level or the sugar syrup would run out along the bottom. I am trying to think of how you could attach them to wires, my guess would be to have the stars all made, set and cooled, then dip heavy floral wire into molten sugar syrup and use it to glue the wire to the back of the star and let it set till cold. They might be pretty fragile done this way.
I saw Michelle Bommarito do something really pretty on a Food Network challenge of seasonal wedding cakes. She made royal icing snowflakes, let them set and then laid them on a piece of what looked like Mylar or acetate paper, then she filled the design of the snowflakes in with clear sugar syrup piped from a parchment bag. You would have to be really careful doing that, if the sugar backed up and came out the top of the bag you could really burn yourself. Maybe you could pour the syrup into a lipped glass pyrex measuring cup and use that to pour over the snowflakes.
I did a sun once for competition. It is in my OSSAS gallery. I am sure you could do a star from pulling???
I'm not saying it can't be done, just that it would be more difficult than casting or pouring sugar into a mold or star shaped cutter. Unless you want the star to be kind of abstract in shape.
Have you ever done pulled sugar before? If not then I would suggest pouring into a mold for starters. Yes, a star could be made from pulled sugar but if I were going to do it I would cast the center piece from poured sugar and pull and cut the tips that way you could get the width and length you needed this would also allow you to form and shape your tips as well. Getting it mounted on your cake is a horse of a different color. I would have to think about that one for a minute.
