Wondering if there are any tips for easily cutting the sugar cones in half (shortening so not so tall) ? I thought maybe the exacto knife would work..but thought I'd ask here in case anyone else has a good tip before I go breaking a bunch
Thanks - Thalia
That does not sound like a silly question, I have wondered the same thing myself (which means I don't have an answer for you).

Hmmm...thought I could "munch" them down cuz we know that works, but it didn't seem like the "right" thing to do to a cake that is going to someone else
OK..it's almost Friday (TGIF) and I'm getting alittle out there

It looks like we may be on our own on this one. I would try the xacto knife although munching sounds like more fun.

I too like the munching idea, but I think I would try a serrated bread knife and go very slowly. I am glad you posted this, I am going to make a castle for my daughter's birthday in a few months and hadn't thought about cutting the cones. Let us know what works, ok? And remember, you can always eat the mistakes.
I say munch within about a 1/4 inch of where want it, and then cut off off the cooties
If you soften the part of the cone you want to cut off it might be easier and not break. dip them in water just short of the point you want to cut off, i know when i have ice cream in a cone, eventually it gets soggy.
Just came on to post I thought of a way and Erin posted the same idea...soak them in water up to the point I want to cut them and then use knife.
I love this site because alot of the time these days between being 50..working fulltime..and raising a 4 yr old (adopted alone, I feel I have what I call "mommy brain" alot. I can handle juggling lots of things, but sometimes common sense escapes me
I also just got my first few orders (paying!!) for cakes. From friends to start..but will help build portfolio, skills and meet new customers.
Enjoy the day all!

Found out soaking in water to cutoff point and then using exacto knife works, although sugar cones because of multiple layers are harder to do and will still crack if not soaked long enough and carefully cut.
I'm sure everyone wanted to know this lol

Has anyone here tried those snippers they use to cut glass and tile? I know someone who works in remodeling, and they use those all the time to cut away at things that are very fragile and they are able to cut what they want without breaking the peice. You can get them at any Home Depot or whatever.
Also, if you do end up with a crack or small break, use icing as glue on the inside of the cone to put back together, and of course the outside will be iced over anyway.
Not sure if either of these will work, but now I think I am wanting to be adventurouse and build my own castle!!
Thalia,
It turned out great! I would love to do a pretty castle cake but my 5 year old BOY is just not interested! I may have to do one just for the heck of it and take it to his school or send it to work with my hubby.

Cindy:
Thank you. I saw some fun castle cakes for boys in the gallery. Probably have to have different colors and knights in shining armour though instead of pink and purple and Cinderella..LOL.

P.S. Posted pic on yahoo group I belong to and woman just asked me if I would do one for her daughter's b'day next week. Was thinking I would be happy to not see another castle for alittle while! For price I think she would pay, I would have to do something much simplier though. Am grateful for the order though!
