So I have had a couple of cake slip ups through the years even the top tier rolling off the cake and around my trunk), but have always been able to save them well enough that the bride never new so I couldn't really call them disasters. Well this time I was the bride so there was no hiding it! This was my own wedding cake that I had decided to take with us to Hawaii (married on the beach just the two of us 8/27/07) come hell or high water. The original plan was to use jam type fillings for stability's sake... but somewhere that plan was lost. I ended up out of time and getting leftover cakes out of the freezer and then taking filling ideas from what I had (cause this is all on the day of our flight). The bottom tier was 2 layers of chocolate with a layer of white in the middle and triple filled with a layers of nutella, peanut butter mousse, and german chocolate filling in between EACH cake layer (waay too sweet I know but its what DH likes). MY tier was the top one, raspberry and white chiffons with key lime mousse and whole raspberries. So I get it all done and decorated with just a couple of hours to spare as seen in pic 1. I put it in the freezer to get it really cold since I didn't have the time to just fridge it like I had wanted.

Then we have to carry this thing (in a 12x12" box) through the airport and all the security along with my wedding dress, luggage, and other carry ons. Surprisingly, security didn't give us any shenanigans. We get on the plane and it WON'T FIT in the overhead (as we were told it would when we called with dimensions) or under the seat... so I placed it on the floor in front of me and hid it with my legs and a blanket. Mmmm toasty warm for the cake! We had a layover in Honolulu and then a 30 min plane to Maui on which at least it did fit in the overhead. Between all that, then getting the bags, car, and finding the condo my poor cake had already been at room temp (a lot hotter room temp than I am used to - remember I am from Alaska!) for about 10 hours. I made my DH look first... and sure enough see pic 2! The whole thing had just collapsed of heat exhaustion onto the side of the box. Luckily I was mentally prepared for this situation so I didn't weep or anything. Oh and did I mention it was STICKY AS HELL??? I don't know how they do fondant in Hawaii... So we took off the top tier, smooshed it back upright and froze it (wedding not for 2 days) then ate the bottom one lol

For the day of the wedding we masked the worst parts and the part of the board where the other cake had been with orchids and it worked pretty well. My DH wanted to scrap the whole idea... but after all that, I WAS HAVING MY STUPID CAKE. You can see the finished cake photos here http://photos.realmauiweddings.com/gallery/3494010#P-2-9

It sounds like you made it work and had a good mind frame about it the whole time. I think you made it look beautiful in the end. Congrats on your wedding by the way.

CONGRATULATIONS to Kory and Martin.

Your wedding photos are gorgeous!!!

Your hair looks amazing, your dress is beautiful, you make a very cute couple.

The remaining cake was saved quite well and doesn't show any signs of trauma as you show in above pics - well done.

After the fact now, but could you of taken all your prepared gear to Hawaii and allowed time to assemble your cake at your apartment/hotel?? I can't believe you were assembling B4 your flight - that would of been stressful!

At least you were not surprised and could laugh at what you found in the box after the flight - you saved the top layer well and looked great in the pics.

I love the sunset kiss, and your picture with your hubby and you in front of your names written in the sand - V. Cute.

Many happy days and laughter to you two......

Thanks all. What would I do differently? Probably no mousse, but I think that could have even been salvaged if I had transported the two tiers separately. That would have made the plane and everything a lot easier. All I had to do on site later was a stinkin border - and we were at a condo with a full kitchen not a hotel. I guess I just didn't think it all the way thru. I would also have added some sort of cold pak to the inside of the box. Oh well, maybe for our 10 year return to the islands!

It WAS stormy! I didn't include that part... as we are on our way to the beach we get a call from the coordinator saying the photographer was there and it was pouring so we had to re-route... and then there were 2 other couples getting married at the same time as us lol

We weren't sure if the better weather would hold, but it did and by the end the sun had come out and there were even a couple of pix w/ some rainbows. It was still pretty windy the whole time tho and I was sooo glad I had a professional give me hurricane proof hair! The poor other ladies that day had gone for the down and curly look and it was all over the place.

I noticed the black sky looming in one of the photos, but didn't notice any panic with you guys and the impending rain. Yes, lucky you had bomb-proof hair.

Black skies and rainbows just make for more interesting photos, same for wind. I love Beach shot esp. in black and white - my niece had pics on the beach after a church wedding and I love their B & W shots near surrounding boulders. It looks very romantic.

You don't want a wedding that runs smoothly 'coz then you have nothing to talk about. You'll have lots of convo's abot - remember the cake?? rem. the weather? remember the ....

No point saying rem. the well timed service. the sunny day? the well rehearsed reception?? That's boring.

You'll look at your photos and have great memories how disaster was overcome with your cake. And laugh at how you guys savaged the middle of the bottom layer!! That's what you did wasn't it?? It didn't fall apart en-route did it?? You couldn't wait to get your little mitts into that disgusting gooey chocolatey moussey cake???

Bet it tasted good didn't it???

Kory, your pictures are stunning. You are so beautiful and I love that you were crying. Saying your vows is so emotional when you are looking into the eyes of the man you are going to love until death parts you. Your cake was beautiful...even after the disaster! Wishing you the best for your future!
