Adding Gum-Tex to MMF for flowers?????

Hello all! I thought I read somewhere on CC that you can mix a little gum-tex with MMF to make it firm up better when making flowers? Anybody have advice/info on this? I'm about to start tinkering around with flowers, and need to learn lillies for an upcoming cake. Will MMF be suitable, or should I try to figure out gumpaste? Any advice from those who have mastered it??? Help!!

Hi there!
You can add GumTex to regular fondant for making flowers...about 1 tsp per 12 oz fondant

In the Gumpaste class we just used straight from the bag ready made Gumpaste and it worked really nicely.

I have found that the Gumpaste is easier to work with but the roses we made for Course III (Wilton) were OK to do and quite pretty when finished....they were the fondant/Gumtex mix.

I haven't made MMF but I don't see why you couldn't add a bit of Gumtex and try it out..I think it would probably work but others who have used it might have better advice...

Good Luck...flower making is really fun!

Thanks JaneK...I think I'll grab a package of the ready-made stuff next time I'm out. I was just hoping to practice after I got the kiddos off to bed tonight. If you do add the gum-tex to the fondant, can you do it after it's already in a ball, or would you have to add it in with the powdered sugar?? (Does that make sense?) I'm wondering if I could just knead it in?? Hmmmm....?

Just knead it in...I wasn't that exact when I added the Gumtex...I just made a pancake from my fondant and then added the gumtex to the middle and folded it up and started kneading...knead it in fully...also, it will dry out quicker so make sure you put it in saran wrap and then a baggie and squeeze out the air when you have finished playing...

If it is sticky, rub your hands with crisco...when rolling it out I think you are supposed to use 50/50 cornstarch/icing sugar but I used Crisco and it was just fine.

Check out the gumpaste gallery if you haven't done so...lots of cool flowers and stuff in there

Edited to add: forgot to tell you to keep your fondant under saran or in a baggie even when you are working with it...it will get all dried out if you don't...
