I find it really rude when a couple invites SO MANY people, but wants to do it on no budget.
Oh yeah I am totally with ya on that. Or I even think of it this way: I understand trying to keep costs in check, ESPECIALLY if you find yourself with a huge guest list for some reason (whether cultural, or just family politics, or coworker politics [ever been thru that one: I can't invite my two best friends at work unless I invite the whole office, etc.] or whatever. But I agree, if they are trying to throw a giant wedding on a budget, THEY need to be the ones making concessions in costs such as...lower budget on the dress, decorations, whatever, wherever they can keep costs low.
Need to keep your cake budget low? That's fine too, but for crying out loud, go to a shop that sells them for a low price then! Don't try to harangue a more expensive decorator into giving you a bargain, it's not their fault your wedding is so huge .
I really wanted a topsy turvy for my wedding 7 years ago, but I knew it would be too $$$ even without asking for prices. So we went to a nice bakery known for really good prices and got a lovely (and delicious) but simple cake which fit into our budget. I don't understand what's so hard about that!
Wish I lived closer. I'd like to go to that wedding to get a peak at the $200 cake to feed that many people.
Ooohhh can you crash the wedding and take pictures of the cake? Is that wrong? I am curious to see what she ends up with.
"Honey, you can't get Happy Meals for that!"
this should also be on a plaque!!! love it.

Hey, if there are 700 guests, who will notice one more roaming around with a camera? heehee

So is she still calling you??? Are you going to crash the wedding and take pics for all of us?? LOL I can't believe the nerve of some people!!
Speaking of gift grab weddings, anyone watch Bridezillas??? Just saw one recently where the Bride and Groom tailored their guest list to those who had money so they would be sure to get an appropriate gift return on their investment of $50 per guest. How's that for disgusting???
Now that's when you know your cake decorating skills have elevated to another level, when you have to tell someone to stop harassing you about making them a cake or legal action would be taken I hope it made you smile.
wow, while I was reading this I couldnt do anything but shake my head, and when I seen the cake picture, just gasped. Some people just dont understand the time, care, work put into the cakes we make.

wow, that's some gall! how selfish can you get?? I was just happy to be surrounded by people I love on our special day. I liked getting gifts but would have been just as happy if nobody bought us anything.

Yes, I did see that one - Sunday night on WE has become my DH and I's source of entertainment until the new seasons of regular TV start.
Watching Bridezilla, then Platinum Weddings (where they know what they are paying for and don't care - like this last Sunday - I think the guest list was around 70, maybe 100 and the cost of all was well over $300,000 - I think the cake was almost $5000 if I remember correctly.)
I just have to say the nerve of some people - been said many times - I am new, and what I would give them wouldn't be as beautiful as the pic of the cake you presented, but I'm not lowering my prices, or my standards for that matter. Where did this woman get her nerve or morals for that matter? My own children know not to call me before 6 a.m., unless someone is bleeding or dying!!
I have to say we were just in the midst of planning our own daughter's wedding recently - splitting 1/2 with groom's family - we had the good fortune of having his aunt give her time and service of the wedding cake as the gift, but she offered first - we had actually decided on someone when she offered - yes, we did "shop" around, but Labor Day Weekend is a busy season - had to start early.
Those posts with the other quotes about "good cake is not cheap", and "Happy Meals" - just love em - will have to add those to my favorites.
i dont even think donuts are THAT cheap. twinkies however..... http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.tackyliving.com/graphics/food/weddingCake.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.tackyliving.com/article.php%3Fid%3D136&h=295&w=250&sz=56&hl=en&start=15&um=1&tbnid=pc25dUYOA4FYNM:&tbnh=115&tbnw=97&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtwinkie%2Bwedding%2Bcake%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN now thats tacky...! fits the bill though.
While brown and white are quite formal, I like a mix of snack cakes. (Image found on the web.)

TOO FUNNY!!!
Hey, that's actually quite creative the way they used the different parts!! Not that I'd prefer that to an actual cake, but you have to give that person points for creativity!!
Sorry, didn't have time to read all the responses, but here's my opinion...........Call and set up a time to meet with her, then completely take her by surprise and "sucker-punch" her right in her nose!
Not that I would have the nerve to do that........but I could live vicariously through you, right?
Sadly they forget the birthday cakes and usually same senerio. They want something specific w/no time to do it and then "how much will that be". People are funny. but we are in control at that point. Well maybe!!!!!!
Ozcookie... do i have the nerve to ask... is it a wog wedding??
And before everyone jumps on me for being racist, there is a difference between being italian or greek and being a wog. For more information on the species known as "wog" see here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylCj-e1IWdU&mode=related&search= )
We have been dealing with alot of wedding registries at work and i have found the female of the species to be the worst. These women are insane! Who needs 3 10pc box sets of pots and pans? Or cutlery ( 3 sets of robert welsh) for that matter. And the most expensive stuff they can find too. I have also found the mothers to be horribly rude, like the bride and groom not having a glassware set worth 800 bucks is going to ruin the wedding!
Lady your crisis is not my emergency!

HAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, gingerkitten you are FUNNY hehehehehehehe, it's an Aussie thing isn't it, the whole wog ideal hahahahahahhaha funny funny, first laugh out loud moment of the morning!

I'm glad someone understood what i was talking about
have a nice day missy x
A whole lot of brides are doing their research and planning their weddings online.
So, I'm sure they are also running into what I have seen while planning my own vow renewal and daughter's wedding this year - namely things like Fire Your Wedding Planner that teaches Brides how to bring the prices down on all the things they must pay for, for their wedding.
The truth is, I have seen some amazing examples of totally inflated wedding stuff - quick example: Buying Jordan Almonds at Michaels. The white ones were $19.99/package - next to it were the pastel ones - same size, same product - different color - $5.00 less than the white ones. Why? Because white means wedding!
Now......the problem as I see it is that a cake should not be something to wheel and deal about. It is wayyyyyyyyyy too time consuming to make to do that. So if they wanna pay less, how about a simpler design then!
My 2 cents on this - Everyone get clear on your pricing and hold your ground because the more wheeling and dealing this profession does, the more people feel that it's expected!!

I'm of Greek descent, but NOT a wog (I hope!) so I really understand what you're getting at
No, she is not, but she is of a particular demographic (I won't go into details, as it may offend) that is well known for this behaviour!
AN UPDATE!!!
I have spoken to my friend who had initially given her my contact details!
Apparently, she had ordered a cake from a very well-known (and expensive) Cake Studio (Sweet Art for those in Sydney)
After speaking to Zoya, she apparently decided that I sounded like the original, desperate sucker, CANCELLED the cake and tried to bull-doze me with a sob-story!!
She has now had to go back to the original Cake Studio, and pay a premium for late notice.
Oh... I wish I had been a fly on the wall for that conversation!!
So now, she has to foot a cancellation fee, the original price plus the late notice premium!
Now, that's what I call KARMA!
(I'd love a chat with the dressmaker and caterer !!)
So now, she has to foot a cancellation fee, the original price plus the late notice premium!
HA HA HA HA PRICELESS !!!! THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WITHOUT A DOUBT PRICELESS!!!!
...hic....laughing so hard I can't get a breath in!!!
You have GOT to see if you can get IN with this cake designer & tell them YOUR side of the STORY!!!
I'm dying this is just soooo funnnnneeeey!!!!
Hey -- I'll send you a WIG to go to the wedding in disguise -- long BLACK Melvira, Mistress of the Dark type wig! heh heh heh
snork...giggle...giggle...snicker...
I'm sorry, I know it's not nice, but that's what she gets for trying to pull one! At the very least she should've tried to work on you and get a contract out of you before cancelling the other order! DUH???
And hey... this isn't a wig! Hahahahahahah!

All I can say is AMEN - Karma is right - what comes around goes around...
She deserves it - if she had 1/2 a brain, she would have talked to you 1st before she cancelled with the original baker in the first place. I'd love to know what she ended up having to pay.
Sorry if soemone already said this but I don't have time to read all 6 pages now -
My first thought was $200 doesn't even cover the PITA charge!!
some people!
I can't get over this. and I agree with everyone on here about paying so much for the dress, reception, and all the extras and then go cheap on the cake. I don't get it. Kidscakelady I love your motto! I agree 100%. Let them go somewhere else if they think they can get it cheaper. You get what you paid for and if they get that price it will be a gross cake!

Hey I may not understand about WOGs but I sure know what a PITA is!!!
