She has now had to go back to the original Cake Studio, and pay a premium for late notice.
Oh... I wish I had been a fly on the wall for that conversation!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif
So now, she has to foot a cancellation fee, the original price plus the late notice premium!

(I'd love a chat with the dressmaker and caterer !!)

HAHAHAHA well its her own fault for being a cow... i bet she cant get a cake at sweetart for under $200, heck i doubt she'd be able to buy a cupcake!!
And i'm glad you got what i meant with the "wog' comment, my partner is italian but hes no wog! I think i can guess what group they are from (teeheehee)

I think they blew the budget on the dress... icon_smile.gif That lady needs to be given a huge dose of reality. She must think that you just throw a cake for 450 people together. I can't even imagine how long it would take you to make one that size, but she would certainly pay a pretty penny for it on the sheer basis that she called you on such short notice, and it sure wouldn't be a fancy cake like she wanted.

Hi Elena,

Hey, just found what you referred to on the phone this morning!!
I'm supposed to be WORKING but I got caught up reading. I'm still laughing!! You go girl!!
I reckon you should have offered her a large polystyrene cone covered with the little white polystyrene balls that you use to fill your beanbags! Cheapskates version of a "crochembuche" - then she might at least have been able to choke on it!!

This whole topic got me thinking. Why is it that people will go out to dinner and pay at least $5 for a slice of some plain ole cake for dessert, but they don't want to pay at least that amount per slice for a wedding cake for their guests to enjoy?

My husband and I eloped and the wedding cake we had for our reception was generously given to us as a gift by his cousin's wife. I didn't chose the design at all, but I was thrilled that she offered to make us a cake. My point is, had I actually had the money for a cake I certainly would have expected to pay well what it was worth for ingredients and the amount of time invested.

If someone really wants to stick to a strict, tight budget, then maybe they should take cake decorating classes themselves and make their own cake. I'm considering doing it for myself when and if my husband and I have a vow renewal.

Just my 2 cents worth!

never thought of it like that before!!!

The only difference I can see is that a wedding cake slice is itty bitty compared to some restaurant desserts....

You simply must have a spy go to this wedding - (love the wig idea) icon_cool.gif At least you can hear what the bride/mob has to say about all this - could be an interesting revelation if it is owned up to - or do you think they are "above" such admissions icon_confused.gif Pictures would be a treat too icon_twisted.gif I must say I am jealous of all the massages being bartered - when will it be my turn icon_cry.gif

Oh let me tell that as a caterer, I dread to hear the bride tell me "a friend" is the photographer. I always ask them if they have a professional photographer or a friend. It makes a BIG difference to me on when we are going to serve dinner. To those who have not yet found a photographer, I strongly encourage them to go pro, explaining how a pro can get all the shots they want in minimal time .... otherwise they need to spend extra money on appetizers and such for their guests, since the couple will be taking FOREVER at the church getting their photos done, and their guests will get bored waiting around, and they will just leave.

God save us all from "friend" photographers!

Patience, grasshopper (oops, I mean Gingerkitten!) and all will be revealed. icon_wink.gif
I have actually had an update, but I was hoping for photos to go with the report.
The news is...

The bride spent the whole day looking like a deer caught in headlights - apparently the MOB has her completely under the thumb. No sympathy for the groom - he must have known what he was getting into. icon_twisted.gif

The dress was... elaborate! So much bling, the poor bride could barely move.

The food was terrible and scanty. Seems our favourite MOB must have tried the same trick on the caterers! (Pity it was in Australia - don't you wish we could have sicced Indydebi onto her? icon_evil.gificon_twisted.gificon_wink.gif - it's OK Debi - I personally think you're wonderful! thumbs_up.gif )

And of course, the CAKE! (Does anybody really want to know? - I'll tell just in case!)

Four-tiered round cake - all white chocolate mud, no fillings, no ganache, no syrups, fondant icing 1/2" thick icon_eek.gificon_confused.gif .
Four fresh red roses on top, a couple of half-dead buds scattered on each tier and a few rose petals on the board (remember, I'm only quoting!)
Taste - well, all I know is that no-one actually finished their slice!

Our beloved MOB actually let slip the price to my friend, during a tirade on how I had cost her a fortune due to my uncooperative attitude! Including original cancellation fee and rush order penalty, this masterpiece cost her $750.00!!! icon_eek.gificon_eek.gif

I actually feel quite sorry for this woman now (or, at least, for her poor daughter). I'm not really a horrible person - but I won't be bullied and I won't be cheated. I think that she may have gotten what she deserved, but she also ruined her daughter's special day.

So she got this cake from your famous upmarket Sweet Art, and it was a pile of trash? I find that hard to believe if true!

Plus $750 (Austrailan?) for a cake to feed 450 people, WITH late fees icon_confused.gif , jeez, I'd charge waaaaaaaaaaay more than that!

However, I guess the moral of the story is that what goes around come s around. I do feel sorry for the bride though.

Apparently, Sweet Art are known for appearance, not content! And she was given a "Special Deal" to make up for the "troubles" she was having. Don't forget, the cake wasn't actually decorated, just a few roses tossed on it. Also, in Australia, pretty much all wedding cakes are done in fondant, so there is no extra charge. And, from the description I was given, I doubt that it was anywhere near big enough to actually feed 450!

Most of my wedding cakes are fondant too, and start at 4 euros per serving ($6.50 AUD) for plain fondant with satin ribbon trim - fresh florals are provided by the florist - of course, I would never let a cake leave my hands that didn't taste as good (if not better!), than it looked! . I guess I'm just floored at how cheap 'designer' cakes are in Oz! If you were to go to the 1 or 2 cake studios that exist in Amsterdam, you'd be paying at least 10-15 euros ($16-$25 AUD) per serving!
