Kandy Clay???

Has anyone ever used this product? I picked some up today, thinking it would be perfect for molding little cars to put on my son's racetrack cake, but it is SOOO stiff. Some of the colors I could not even work with, it just broke apart. I tried adding a dab of water, putting it in the microwave for a few seconds.... I was just wondering if my package was stale, or is this normally how this product is?

i've never used the store bought type - i make my own using candymelts and liquid glucose. With the home made type it is either very stiff or not stiff enough. It hardens when it sits and the more you play with it the softer it gets. Sometimes too soft. I have some of the store bought at home that I never opened - i'll have to check it out.

I have a small pamphlet "Candy easy as 1-2-3" by Wilton. I haven't tried it yet but it seems easy to make your own. This info is from the pamphlet:

Ingredients: 14-oz package candy melts and 1/3 cup light corn syrup.

Instructions: Melt candy melts following package directs. Add corn syrup and stir to blend. Turn out mixture onto waxed paper and let set at room temperature to dry. Wrap well and store at room temperature until needed. Candy clay handles best if hardened overnight.

To tint: Candy clay may be tinted using Wilton candy or icing color. Knead in color until well blended.

To use: Candy clay will be very hard at the start; knead a small portion at a time until workable. If candy clay gets too soft, set aside at room temperature or refrigerate briefly. When rolling out candy clay, sprinkle work surface with cornstarch to prevent sticking; roll to approximately 1/8 in. thickness.

To store: Prepared candy clay will last for several weeks at room temperature in a well-sealed container.

that's basically the same recipe that i used. use colored candy melts and you won't have to color the candy clay!
