Hi
I am making a birthday cake for my daughter's friend tonight(turning eight). I am doing flip flops on top of a 9x13 cake. I want to put "sand" on top of the cake. What tastes better-graham cracker crumbs or brown sugar???
thanks
Sandra

Thanks
I ended up using the graham cracker crumbs. I posted a picture of the finished cake. I didn't tell the mom what I was making so I'm sure she'll be surprised by the cake tomorrow. She wanted to save some money so I said I'd make the cake for her.

Sandra, your cake looks beautiful! I have been wanting to do a flip flop cake like that but was not sure how it would look on top of a sheet cake. Now I know! Great work! thumbs_up.gif

I have a beach cake due for Friday, and was going to use the granulated brown sugar, but after seeing the graham cracker, I might just use that instead. Not as sweet as the brown sugar on top of buttercream icon_smile.gif

Oreo cookies now come in vanilla! I used that for sand the other day. Not only did it look like sand, the creme in the center when it was ground up made it feel soft like sand, and boy did it taste good! I made cupcakes, covered them with a flat layer of buttercream. I then covered them with the crushed oreos. Took some little teddy grahms on top and used those little umbrellas that Wilton has, they are on clearance now at Micheals. Took tip 21 and made a shell border in blue around the cupcake to give the feel of water. The cupcakes were so simple to make. I also took some teddy grahms and stuck them into the cupcake and it looked like they were half buried in sand on the beach! Great little summer cupcakes.

I've used used both brown sugar and the graham crackers but my daughter says the brown sugar is better....I think the kids tend to think the brown sugar is better and the adults like the graham cracker crumbs.

For my sandcastle cake, I used Sugar in the Raw mixed with Nilla Wafers. It was vanilla cake with lemon filling. The combination was perfect!

I am making a sand castle cake in a few days and I saw one where the sand was made with pecan sandies cookies...looks real good to me. Matter of fact I may have seen it on here. Brown sugar just seems like it would be too sweet. Anyone ever have one made with brown sugar? Does it tast as good as it looks?

I always use brown sugar. Have you ever tasted brown sugar/yellow homemade cake w/ cream cheese icing??? Oh my goodness it is soooooo good!!! That's what my ocean cake was. The taste was incredible!! So brown sugar is my pick~
