Does anyone know how to make a sweet sixteen cake of the number 16 in an upright position?

The 16 can be made out of gum paste, allowed to dry it is very hard and can be stood up on the cake. It can also be cookies that are ice with Royal Icing and decorated. Look in the gallaries under birthday cakes and you'll probably find lots of cakes with nice numbers on them.

I agree with lapazlady, but how about making it with chocolate molds, candy melts come in so many colors. Or you could use chocolate clay.

This is a cake I did this summer for a boy's 16th birthday. I printed the numbers off the computer to have a template to go by, rolled the fondant out, and went to cutting. I attached them to lollipop sticks and let them dry for several days. I really liked the way they turned out. HTH!

I know what you're asking..

you may need to do a dry run..

you may need to cut the cakes with a wider bottom all around so they are stable. The number 6 you may have to flaten the bottom round so it stays upright.

Also you may need to dowl them like crazy! you may ask or PM Doug to do a sketch for you...

you can also drill a hole in the bottom of a cake board and a dowel then sink in the screw on the bottom of the board so that it's flush with the board and stack the cakes on top!

HTH
