Let me begin by saying that I cannot get a license to sell cakes from my home. I've only sold cakes to friends who insisted on paying me. I've kept my cake creations to a minimum (no more than 2 per week) because I've got two very small children, and THEY are my 24/7 job - not making cakes!

But business is booming, as they say, and now I don't know what to do! It's really exploded this weekend when I made a cake for my friend's daughter, whose party was at Build-a-Bear in the mall. Well if you're trying not to advertise your cakes to the public, don't bring one to the mall! LOL I was bombarded, and now my phone is ringing off the hook with order requests. So far I've been able to say I'm booked - I truly am, with the holidays approaching! I've got very little time to make any cakes! I don't do any advertising - I don't even have business cards.

What should I do?

Just take as many cakes are you feel comfortable with, and find someone reputable to send your "overflow" customers to. I have an arrangement with my Wilton instructor to send her my overflow.

I agree with Kelleym.... if you are booked - you are booked... do as many cakes as you feel comfortable with- as you said this is not your main job-- and pass along the business. People will learn to book you way in advance.

I'll do them LOL. Just kidding. I love to hear stories like yours. I hope some day I get booked! Heck I just want an order!

I do mine for family and friends as well and am still very new to this. I know I need to do some more dramatic cakes for my portfolio to really have something to show.

I say do the cakes, take what orders you can. Just pick and choose what you feel comfortable with doing.

Is this something that you *want* to do more of? Or are you content turning away business and staying where you're at?

If you want to do more, let's brainstorm on how to get you there. If not, I think others have given good advice about sending your extra business to trusted friends or other businesses.

Congrats on your booming business, by the way! That's a wonderful and exciting place to be in. May the blessings continue.

Thanks so much to all of you for your advice, blessings, and words of encouragement! I'm very caught up in the excitement of it all right now - I'd love to sit down with my husband tonight and review our options of me renting space to sell cakes from...but that would defeat the purpose of being a SAH mom! I was a teacher before I had children, and I hope to get back in the classroom one day, once my own kids are in school. But who knows? I might trek down this road instead!?!

We'll see...for now I'll make as many cakes as I can until my husband starts complaining - he takes care of the kids on the weekends while I'm baking/decorating. Bless his heart - in addition to his full-time job as a computer programmer, he owns his own business designing and hosting web sites. So he's quite busy as well. So if I win the lottery tomorrow I'll look into building a commercial kitchen near my home, complete with a nursery and playroom for my children. LOL icon_smile.gif
