I have seen all these beautiful wedding cakes that have real ribbon wrapped around them. I need to ask some ?s of some who have made them! Is there a certain kind of ribbon that you recommend? And when do you put them on? Before or after transport?? Will satin ribbon bleed on the cake?? Will putting on early in the day be bad if the reception is in the evening?

I ask cuz my sister is getting married and wants blue satin ribbon wrapping a solid white BC cake. It is a dark blue ribbon. Her cake lady told her that all of the 6 spools she has picked out will bleed and ruin the cake. The cake lady says only sheer ribbons will work, but my sister wants opaque ribbon. I can swear that most of the ribbons on here that look like what she wants. I made her shower cake and used the exact blue satin ribbon she wanted and it was fine but I put it on at 3 and they cut it at 6, so I don't know if that is a good judge of how it will work. The ribbon did have grease smudges, but who would use it after peeling it off the cake anyway?!?!

TIA

Some people line the back of their ribbon with waxed paper to prevent bleeding or greasing of the ribbon, but I don't think that would work with opaque ribbon. If the cake lady says she wouldn't do it, I would personally believe her. We have to support out fellow decorators. Maybe they can come up with a ribbon that they both agree on. thumbs_up.gif

I line mine with clear packing tape. Cut off the excess from the top and bottom. This seems to work great for me.

I would get some of that ribbon and some butter cream and try all the ideas such as Wax paper ironed on, packing tape, and I just read one today that uses press n seal and see what happens.

personally I think it can be done.. but If the cake lady is not comfortable with doing this I think you need to go with her.. If you ask her to do something she is not familiar with it could ruin the cake if she doesnt know how to do it properly, and of course she wouldnt be responsible for it becuase you demanded it..so I would go with her on this one..

Just another viewpoint here - ck41500 is it possible that the cake decorator make the cake minus the ribbons (leaving an area for them) and then you or your sister put them on trying the above suggestions? This way your sister gets what she wants but the decorator wouldn't feel pressure to do something that she thinks won't work. Just a thought.

Hope it gets resolved satisfactorily for all parties involved. icon_smile.gif

I use clear contact paper on my satin ribbons. The grease made it through a little bit on the last one so I might double the thickness next time. In my experience, if it's going to bleed than it will do it within 15 minutes or so. I would try to wait until last minute or a few hours before if possible. The summer heat doesn't help down here in GA. Good luck!

I use clear contact paper also. Like GA I'm in TX and the heat is something else so I double the contact paper.

Thanks!! These are all great ideas! Her wedding is in December so humidity shouldn't be a problem! She was thinking of just giving a spool to the lady and if she won't put it on the cake, my sister will have another spool at the reception site and have a cousin that has done cakes before put it on right before the bride and groom come in.
