Hello,
I told myself I'd buy an airbrush when I got an order big enough to pay for it. Well, I have the money now, but am unsure if I should get it or not! I'm wondering from those who have one if they use it as much as they thought they would?? Do they usually take different food coloring mediums? (I use americolor and was wondering If I'd have to buy all new colors for it) Thoughts/comments??

Unless you have americolor airbrush colors you will have to buy new colors. You can't use gel colors in an airbrush. I just got mine so I haven't used it a lot yet but I think I will. I purchased mine from Roland Winbeckler and I love it!

I love my airbrush too! I don't use it as much as I thought that I would, but it has been great for the cakes that I used it on. It saved me a ton of trouble on a wine bottle cake that I made. Instead of having to make black fondant which is always a pain - I made a chocolate mmf recipe that was a nice brown color and then airbrushed black over it and it looked great. It is definitely nice to have on hand. Oh yeah, I also used it to make some cool fondant flames for a cake for my sister which was super easy.

I agree.....I seldom decorate a cake without picking up my airbrush for something. I mostly use it for shading. .....the outer edges of the cake, the picture I am putting on the cake, the background for a scene.
I Love my airbrush.

My hubby got me into airbrushing. I've only used it on one cake so far, but love it! But hubby thought I could use it for EVERYTHING, but I like airbrushing only for certain types of looks. He bought me every air gun out there to mankind for all different types of work, as well as every supply possible! I don't use the dusts in mine although a lot of people do, I just don't want the hassle of super duper cleaning as it can clog it up. I don't have Americolor yet since they are out of stock, but use other brand. I'm waiting for Americolor BLACK to get in stock as the brand I have isn't a good black.
You will either use it or you won't.
It's not as easy as it seems either. You have to practice with it alot.
Like everything else, it's another toy for the craft.

I learned this from a friend who owns a custom cake shop - she does NOT use the Americolor airbrush colors. She takes REGULAR gel Americolor, squirts a tiny, tiny bit in a small drinking glass, then adds water and stirs with a spoon. Then she uses the spoon to fill the well of the airbrush and off she goes! It only takes a tiny amount of color in the water and it works great, no clogs! What a $$$$ saver!!

www.kopykake.com
I have the Airmaster Compressor and Airbrush ($250). They also sell the Kroma-Jet Compressor and Airbrush for $160. You can use Kopykake brand of color or Americolor. (I have some of both.)

I love my airbrush. I use it all the time. (I have even made my own stencils.) I colored a whole cat cake grey and an apple cake red because I didn't want to color the buttercream. It worked great! It saved time and I got truer colors and nobody had to have black or red teeth!! I would recommend getting one if you can. You will learn to love it quickly!

*You might find one on E-Bay but just make sure it is new or was only used for cake decorating.

I got my from my husband for Mother's Day and I rarely make a cake. or iced cookies, without using it. I LOVE IT! I guess it all depends on hor artistic you are too. If you have any love for art, whatsoever, you will LOVE it. I agree with being able to do black a lot easier now. It used to take FOREVER to mix black icing. Now you just airbrush it and it takes no time a all!

Mine is the Aztec kit from Roland Winbeckler. It was a little expensive but you can get right down on top of the cake and not blow a hole in it because it is a double action airbrush. A friend of mine has the kopy kake airbrush and after seeing mine she immediately ordered it.

Here's the link to Roland's website http://www.winbeckler.com/airbrush_supplies.asp It should be Aztek, I spelled it wrong in the original post.
