Hi!
I am attempting to make some edible butterflies for my daughter's birthday cake for next week, but its turning out to be a disastrous exercise!

I have wafer paper and some Americolor foodpens - When im tracing out the butterflies, the wafer paper gets soaked in the color and starts to disintegrate. If this does not happen on the first side, it definitely happens on the reverse side. What am I doing wrong here? I didn't think I was holding the pen at any place for too long.

Also, I tried eating one of the butterflies, and it was terrible - bitter from the colors I'm guessing. If no one can eat the butterflies, should I just stick to vellum paper and the food colors?

I appreciate all the help in this. Thanks a lot.

I made edible butterflies and dragonflies for our daughters wedding. I used the gel colours and vodka to paint them but use a VERY dry brush or they will go wonky on you. I used black gumpaste for the body.
I tasted one and didn't find any taste to them really....but I know lots of folks use the vellum paper etc. for them if you DO NOT want them edible. There is also a place, sugarcraft I believe, that you can order the edible wings by the sheet. I just wanted to make my own.
Oh and some people I guess put clear piping gel over the wings.
Hope that is of some help, I'm really pretty new to this and don't like to offer much advice. There are lots of much more knowledgable people on here.

I made some using wafer paper, coco butter and powder colors. Melt the coco butter over some hot water and mix small qty's with the colors. Because it contains no water the paper doesnt disintegrate or warp!
