I was wondering if I could get some opinions on this cake. I was asked to make this pyramid cake (she found the pic on the net) for a one-year anniversary party (80-100 guests).

Do you think the triangle cakes on the sides are actually tapered or do you think that is an optical illusion. I was thinking that I could take a very high cake, cut it diagonally and lie it on its edge and that would work but if it tapers it won't.

Any suggestions, advice or opinions welcome.

Thanks,
Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,
I am not exactly sure what you meant by "tapered", but it lookes to me that it is a 2 square cakes stacked on top of each other then triangle shapes were cut out of another couple of cakes, iced then placed on each level, with the points of the triangles pointed in towards the cake. It is hard to write it out, I hope I am making some sort of sense.
To make the triangles, you could just take a square cake and cut it into four pieces by cutting an X in the square. (I guess this is what you were saying you could do, though) icon_smile.gif

Sorry if I wasn't much help. I am sure you could do this very easily. icon_biggrin.gif

I guess I didn't explain it very well myself.

What I was trying to ask is whether the triangle cakes are narrower at the top and wider at the bottom. This would be hard to do no? If they are the same width at the top and bottom of the level then it would be easy to cut but if not....I'm stumped.

I realize that it's two square cakes stacked and then the triangles...it's the triangles that was making me wonder. Also, what do you figure is at the top. I see four triangles but they aren't exactly abutting...there's something in the middle. I'm not doing the fire but a King Tut chocolate instead. (I know that this pyramid is Aztec and King Tut is Egyptian but that's what the customer wants).

Clear as mud now? ha ha,
Suzanne

Ohhhh, now I understand what you meant!! icon_wink.gif
I have been staring at it and it looks to me as if the triangles are not tapered, I think it IS an optical illusion. I can't really tell what is in the middle of the triangles at the top of the cake, sorry, maybe it is just a piece cut out to fit in the hole. Or maybe they just put a BIG O'L BLOB of icing in that hole. LOL!!!! (just kidding)

I am still thinking how you might taper them. But I am always thinking when it comes to cake. hehe
Just remember, you are more of a critic than the lady will be. If you don't taper them, I don't really think she is going to be able to tell. You might could just do what you thought and make the taper with icing. ??? But it really doesn't look tapered to me.

Hope this might help.
Great looking cake, I know you will do a great job!

Both cakes are great! What sizes of cake did you use for the pyramid? Did you just comb the icing to make the 'steps'? Is that a small square that King Tut is sitting on?

You did a great job.

Wow, thanks everyone!

I don't think it turned out nearly as nice as the picture from where I got the inspiration but I was happy nonetheless...happy that it got done anyway. icon_lol.gif

The chocolate King Tut was done in a mold that I bought from Sugarcraft and then I applied gold hiliter dust. I put it on dry and it went on like a dream. I covered a small piece of cake board with fondant and used the dust on that as well for his little platform. I transported these pieces separately. All else went together and boy was it heavy...poor hubby.

As for the cake sizes, the bottom tier was 14" square and the next up was 8" square and the very top was cut to fit from a 4" square. The bottom triangles came out 4" and the next came out 3" while the top ones were 2" or close to it.

Yes the stairs were combed to give them that look. My combing was the worst part. I don't know how they made them look so good in that first pic. I think it went wrong because I was worried about icing quantity as I knew colour matching would be near inpossible and put a scant amount on before combing. So, I think a thicker coating before combing the stairs would have helped.

Thanks for looking,
Suzanne M.

Save away. I got the baby shower cake idea from Lindy's Cakes...I forgot to say that. And I don't know where the original pyramid cake picture came from because the client e-mailed it to me.

Thanks again for all your kind remarks,
Suzanne M.
