paint it with gold luster dust. you do need to paint it on thickly though for a good gold color. and i wouldn't just dust it on, i'd mix it with alcohol to make a paint.

color the fondant as close to gold as possible, then wet-brush the gold luster dust on with strong high alcohol content lemon extract or liquor.

I use vodka... makes the whole cake decorating experience much more relaxing... Oh, you meant the cake! hehehe-yeah vodka, it's clear and it doesn't have a smell or taste to it.

When I get streaks, I wait for the alcohol to evaporate, then go over the dust very lightly with a big, fluffy, dry brush. It really helps blend those streaks.

Ok, here it is: the official I-Have-No-Life-It's-Friday-Night-And-I-Am-In-The-Kitchen-Report:

I tried old gold, golden bronze and nu silver with artificial lemon extract and with vodka. (I only had the fake stuff on hand)
The results: the gold and the bronze were fine with lemon extract, and it had a nice lemony scent--reminded me of Pledge... icon_smile.gif The nu silver, on the other hand, had a yellow-tinge to it from the extract. thumbsdown.gif But all were fine and true to color with the vodka. The extract did dry very quickly, even in the bowl while I was trying to mix my "paint"!

I painted on fondant ropes I made, because I have no life, and used cherry pink, kelly green, and white. They were what I had laying around...
The result: They all showed up best on the GREEN!!! I'd read here that gold shows up better on green, but now I know for myself that it does! If I had streaks or spots that weren't as sparkley as I wanted, I just got another brushfull of extract or vodka, mixed it up with the dust left in the mixing pot and did another light coat, it evened things out nicely.

Ok, I did a little look around while typing this, and if you're absolutely opposed to having alcohol in/on your cake, how about Almond Extract? It should give the lovely flavor/scent of almonds/cherries, no funny yellow color, and no booze. It still has alcohol that evaporates, but it's also common in our kitchens if you don't feel like running to the liquor store!

Hope that helps, hope you like it, hope I find a life... icon_confused.gifthumbs_up.gif

I used Gold leaves in my gold bar cake (my photo's). They're thin sheets of gold but a really pain to get on. I'd rather recommend the gold spray im sure its much easier.
