i've been asked to do a "quarter sheet cake king of the hill cake". i let the person know i dont do sheet cakes, so i offered the equivelant (is that like a 9x13 size....a double layer 8" round or carved ?)

i dont know a thing about the show. i'd like to do something carved or a round cake with interpretive decorations. something different, not average... and not sheet cake style.

any ideas? thanks!

p.s. this is for a grown up male who loves the show. birthday...just enough to feed "family"... so it shouldnt be huge.

I have grown to love this show since they put it between the Simpsons. If you go to the Fox website they have pictures and bios of the show.

I think a cake to look like they are in their alley would be great. It is a thing they do in every show. All the guys hang out in the alley with their beer and talk about their day. I promise if you watch just one episode you will understand. In fact on the website that is what they show.

What inspires me would be to do a 9x13 cake and decorate it half in green and half in black to make it look like grass and asphanlt (cover it in green fondant or buttercream or use the tip that make frosting look like grass. I would then make a picket fence to run through the middle of it. then if you could make the characters to stand in front.

I promise any fans of the show will know immediately.

huh. thats interesting... LOL.

knowing very very little, my first thought was to do a can of beer. but wanted more of a thorough representation.

my issue is...the person , when asked the budget said...i dont know yet, i mean i am not looking to spend $100 or anything.

so. for me, that is a red flag at, this has to be a cool cake, but i cant spend hours and hours detailing it cause i am not cheap. i told her i'd get some ideas and let her know and she can decide from there if she wants to spend the money on what i offer her. i have a hard time staying simple though.

Just the title made me giggle!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I love that show!!!

My first thought was "propane and propane accessories".

Maybe a sheet cake with a shiny silver propane tank on top with a picket fence behind it. The tank on one side and the fence standing up going all the way across the cake, with all the guys standing there drinking beer.

Post a picture when you get it done....it will be great!!!

Maybe you could just cover a cake in white fondant, then do a pin prick of this picture, and paint it on like I did Ben10 in my photos.

It's fast, it's easy, it looks cartoonish, and you could probably paint the whole alley on the cake in no time. The longest part was actually poking the holes.. hehe

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck. I'm sure anything you do will be gorgeous.

Holly

p.s. My Ben10 isn't great, so please don't think it won't work based on that. It was a last minute cake, and I messed up a few times and didn't really have time to fix it.

**edit** I'm not sure why they have the little recycle bin in the photo. On the cartoon it's usually a cooler for their beer. Red cooler, I think.. or a white cooler with a red lid. Hope this helps.

such funny ideas! thank you!!! you've all got me laughing. i just looked at the website. oh my. LOL

hollyanna, that is the picture i saw on the website and was thinking.... (before i saw several more ideas suggested...)

carving a square cake into the shape of texas, covered in yellow fondant. fondant fence posts around the sides of the "texas" shape. green fondant on the base board (maybe with red fondant letters cut into the board that say king of the hill) then this is where my idea got weak.... chocolate transfers? (not so good at fondant modeling- plus its probably out of her budget.oh heck, any of my cakes probably are...however, maybe she'll take a 6 pack of beer with a king of the hill edible image plastered on top...haha) anyway, chocolate transfers of the four guys holding thier beer cans.

does that sound dorky?

I like chocolate transfers. They're easy, they actually look cartoonish (great for when doing a cartoon character). I think that will be very good. It's also not expensive, so I'm sure she will like that. The only thing I don't like about them is coloring all that chocolate. I hate coloring icing too, though.. hehe

I can't wait to see your photos! I love your ideas.

OR, maybe just the yellow texas, fondant fence surrounded the sides, green fondant on board and beer cans scattered on the ground (fondant)? that saves me from modeling characters.

the propane idea is a gas...oh, i just made a funny! really, thats clever!

hollyanna, i need to check out your ben10 cake, your idea is smart. i can paint!

The show is about a bunch of rednecks so Im sure it would be easy...maybe too easy! to come up with something to the theme. I like the beer can idea, you should probably have them burning their trash in a barrel or something and half buried tires and stuff.

ok, now i 'm thinking....yellow texas, fenceon sides, green board, yada yada....fondant beer cans, cigarette butts and a propane tank . red fondant letter inlays (use letter cutters to cut out green fondant off the board and put red letters in) that says happy birthday so and so.

then just leave the rest up to him to interpret. the characters, though they would add an aspect of cool- is just not working for me. budget and time wise, i need to simplify it.

if any of you fans of the show saw that, would you immediately know the show or would it take a minute of prodding to figure it out?

as in a BIG propane tank (like several hundred gallons size?) or a barbeque grill tank size?

i love the thought of using silver luster dust. every cake needs luster dust.

Boy, if you could visit Hurlock, you would see it for yourself!! We live in a new neighborhood that was built on an old farm. The rest of the town is pretty dumpy and then your surrounded by corn fields and chicken farms! So, I see all this first hand, sad to say!! We even have a local neighbor that should of been on the episode of COPS!!!

I haven't read all the post so forgive me if this was repeated..but after looking at the picture of the 4 men standing in front of the fence..this is what came to mind.

Do a round..(or square cake). With a picket fence made of fondant around the cake. Make the four men out of fondant or maybe rice paper image of them glued on top of fondant. Then glue them on the fence around the cake drinking beer. Then maybe on top of the cake could be Hank Hill's house.

Im not sure that I'd realize it meant "King of the Hill" if I saw a Texas shaped cake with a fence around it and beer cans with cigarette butts on it. I think you'd need the characters in it. Otherwise it might just look like youre saying Texas is trashy lol. .... I like the idea of the characters by the fence with maybe a propane tank, or doing the chocolate transfer thing.
