Does anyone know if it is legal to sell bake goods out of your home in Michigan and also to decorate cakes. Please help me on this one it's something I really want to do but don't know if I can. I do have a separate area outside of my house that I may convert into a kitchen area if I can do that. I really don't know though what is required to do that. Help if you can please.

To bake from the home, you have to have a seperate kitchen; you cannot use your regular kitchen to bake and sell cakes. Either that, or you could have your own storefront. Michigan is kind of a son of a gun state to becoming legal.

They are sticklers. Something like you have to have a seperate entrance to the kitchen and you must not share any appliances with your home kitchen ... if you google "home bakery michigan", you'll find only 1 or 2 concise explanations, but they're pretty strict.

You can call the Dept of Agriculture and they can come to your house to tell you exactly what you need. You need a separate kitchen, with some rules. Basically, a door separating it from the rest of the house, 4 sink basins (washing , rinsing, disinfecting, and hand washing), everything sold must be done in this kitchen and you can ONLY use the kitchen for your business, nothing for personal use. I think the license is $70 a year.
