I think a little (very little) lemon, orange or vanilla flavoring is great. Either extract or lorann oil... to your taste. I always put vanilla, and have never thought it was without taste, expecially combined with the cookie.

Have you tried it on a cookie? I think the icing is fabulous with cookies, but not by itself (no kidding - it's not supposed to be eaten alone).

I don't know about putting Lorann Oils in - any fat will break royal down. I don't think that's such a good idea. Extracts, maybe, but not oil.

Sorry...it's because the meringue powder I purchase here locally already contains vanillin flavouring....an ingredient that I didn't realize Wilton and some other brands do NOT contain when I created my recipe years ago.

You can certainly add extract, but make sure it contains no oil. Royal icing dries slower and at worst can even break down when it is mixed with oil.

Antonia74's icing ROCKS!!!! And, so does she, BTW...so, SO, SOOOOO helpful!!!!!!!! icon_biggrin.gif

I, too, usually add a bit of extract and it tastes fabulous with NFSC....

I LOVE Antonia74's icing and so do all of my customers. I use almond extract in my cookies and my icing; it is everyones favorite flavor.

I started using MMF on my cookies and they were so sweet, did not like it at all. I decided to use Antonia's RI since everyone here loves it and now I am hooked!! Love that stuff on my cookies. I just do it exactly as the recipe said, and no one has any complaints. Maybe is like Cranberryco said, eating it with the cookie might taste better for you. I hope you give it a try again.

Outline it first with a smaller tip, like a #2 or #3...then let it dry a few minutes. Come back and flood the entire cookie with a bigger tip like a #4 or #5. Circles are pretty hard to flood accurately without an outline, so just make it easier on yourself and do one first.

I wrote a whole article for this site on the basics of decorating cookies, with step-by-step photos:

Here are some Smiley Face cookies I did last month and some from a year ago:

So sorry for the bad advice! I shouldn't suggest anything I haven't already tried (still learning!). I HAVE added extracts and usually use vanilla with great results. Thank you Antonia for your tutorial. <<<Cheryl
