I'm glad you said that Applegum. I was pretty sure they weren't the same thing but was wondering if I had lost the plot.
We had golden syrup dumplings instead of sponge pudding. The dumplings were simmered in a golden syrup mix on the stove. Delicious. I personally like the plain dumplings in the syrup as opposed to the dumplings that also have golden syrup added to them.
ATreacle and Golden Syrup aren't the same thing, however colloquially (at least in my family - we're from the South East of UK) 'treacle' means 'Golden Syrup'. For example when I was little we used to have 'dumplings and treacle' for dessert on a Sunday. In fact it was dumplings with golden syrup. Also the recipe Cake Chemistry posted is delicious - have made it many a time for a comfort food hit :)

AWikipedia says golden syrup is treacle so I'm going with it!

It is a similar colour and texture to honey, although doesn't taste the same (in saying that, my recipe for honey cake doesn't use any honey at all... only golden syrup! LOL)

AThat's why it's called treacle pudding/treacle tart even though it doesn't have black treacle in it. It's not called golden syrup tart!
AWell now given that I can't find any place that sells non-dark treacle, I believe I owe [@]cupcakemaker[/@] an apology - I guess that what I remembered being called treacle as a child was in fact golden syrup, although I'm still sure they used to sell 'treacle' as well. Maybe it's the fact that they sell golden syrup in a squeeze bottle now that threw me off!

AI've seen it in a couple of shops here. I don't really use it but it does look handy!

AIt might be that golden syrup is a type of treacle, but treacle isn't just gold syrup - a brand name thing like Hoover and vacuum? Whatever it's called it's blooming delicious :)
