I am getting ideas for a cake for a Marine Corps Drill Instructor, and thought about doing the "infamous" campaign cover. However, it's made of dark olive drab felt, and wanted to make this cake look as real as possible. I would like to know how I can acheive this look with buttercreme. By the way, if you add milk instead of water, it makes the frosting taste soooo much better. Just an idea for those who haven't tried. Anyway, off the subject... Is there a way to spray frosting (like a textured wall sort of)? Like I said, I'm trying to make it look like felt. If anyone could help, that would be great, thanks...

How about going over your crusted icing using a paper towel that has a pattern on it and then spray it with either an airbrush or the spray colors made by Wilton.

A paper towel seems to look more like spackle than the "fuzz" of felt. I'm just trying to see if there is a better way. I may go with that if I can't think of anything else. If I frosted the cake, and went over the wet icing with a towel, would that do better, since I'm not putting frosting on, just kinda texturing it? I'm guessing I would have to work with a slightly more than thin icing for this to look better...

Maybe you could "stipple" with a paint brush!

..yeah, forgot that I just read in one of the American Cake Decorating mag that someone use a new scrub brush to stipple but that might give you to rough of a finish. Paint brush sounds like a better idea!!

In one of the books I have, they used a steel wool scouring pad into fondant to get a rough look...
