Ok so out of the kindness of my 14 year old son's heart he decided that offering my services to make his girlfriend a cake would be a splendid idea...

So last night i set out to make her a cute little cake...her request...1/2 choco 1/2 vanilla, girly with cherries, but not real cherries, sparkley, glittery cherries...

As I was doing this "out of the goodness of my heart" cake, i was reminded of the several times people have said that they wont even turn on their oven for less than 30 people and there were going to be 5-15 people at this party...which is today at 5PM.

I completed the cake baking, frosting and decorating, clean up and mopping the floor by 11PM (started at 6PM), with feet and back aching I decided to go and get my CC fix for the night and then call it a day.

When I went to check on the cake before bed I noticed that a couple of the leaves and a cherry had fallen off the side of the cake but decided that I would just fix it before I brought the cake over tonight, that way if any other pieces fell off I could fix it all at once...no problem...

This morning when I woke up, the same leaves and cherry were still laying there and I still resisted the urge to fix it and went to work. My son just called and asked why i scraped all the cherries off the top of the cake and how was I going to be able to redecorate the top of the cake and get the cake to her by 5:30? I told him he must have lost his mind, that i did nothing of the sort. While he was on the phone with me he walked back in the kitchen to make sure he wasn't losing his mind and there sitting on top of the stove LICKING THE FROSTING OFF THE TOP OF THE CAKE WAS DRADON, THE CAT!!!! OMG I want to kill that cat! He is now outside, where I hope he has the worst case of the BC SH tapedshut.gif ts anyone or anything has ever had!!!!

What do I do now???? I promised this girl a cake. She is so looking forward to it and now I will have 15 mintues from the time i get home to bake, frost and decorate a new cake?!?!?! Impossible! The cake is 2 6" torted (so 4 layers total). Do I dare go to Wal-Mart or a local grocery store and purchase one already decorated, do I call and say sorry the cat ate your cake, BTW Happy Birthday!, do i remove the top layer (the only part the cat touched and refrost the top?

Someone with a level clear head please point me in the right direction!!!

OMG that is HORRIBLE!!!!!!!! BAD BAD BAD KITTY!!!

Since this isn't a super important cake and your son witnessed what happened, I'd go to the store and get her a cake. You did your best and made her what she wanted. It is out of your control that the evil kitty destroyed it.

A cake is better than no cake!!

good luck,
Ashlee

Oh no!! I would have to say that you really shouldn't try to serve the cat-licked cake, even if you remove some parts of it.
Is there any way you can buy a plain cake and quickly BC and make some decorations - probably the only part she really cares about are the sparkly cherries! What about buying real cherries and dipping them in sugar for the sparkly look?
And you don't have to have it by 5.30, the party can start without the cake. You can just turn up with it later with a fanfare and a funny story to go with it.
GOOD LUCK!!
P.S. Buy an umbrella fly net thing from the $ store so this doesn't happen again!

I absolutely agree about not serving the cat licked cake...Basically my only option is go to Wal-Mart on my lunch pick up a cake and decorate it when i get home and deliver it...

to make matters worse...When I finally did get to bed last night, my DH and I got in a huge fight (huge for us is small for most because we never argue and he doesn't raise his voice -no fun at all to fight with!!! icon_smile.gif ). He said we dont spend enough time together because we work too much, I am at football with our 2 DS's or I am alway making a cake!!!! Wait til he finds out the 5 hours I spent in the kitchen being a miserable PMSing B tapedshut.giftapedshut.giftapedshut.giftapedshut.gif last night was for nothing!!! ...I should probably take him out for dinner huh????

You know what? Crap happens. You did your best and hopefully this girl will be gracious enough to understand that. If I were you I would pick up the prettiest already-made cake I could find, take it to her for her party, tell her what happened, and promise that sometime later when you have extra time available you will remake her little dream cake and have her over for dinner to enjoy it. Then I would take my husband out for a nice quiet dinner and really enjoy it.

I had a similar experience making a large cake for a Middle School Graduation Dance. I had crumb coated and was rolling out fondant, I stepped away for a minute and found my dear fat cat sitting on my fondant whiskers deep in my tasty BC crumb coat. Fortunately she had just got started so I tossed the fondant and replaced they layer. I was cracking up when I walked in seeing her cat face with Icing stuck to it. It was annoying but I had plenty of time to rebake what I had to. From then on I have been very vigilant to keep the Cat out of the kitchen during decorating.

You poor thing!! I can sympathize. I have three cats and there have been many times over the years when they've come close to being included on the dinner menu or as decorating accents (I especially love the Abby-mix's fur and more than once have threatened to make a Yoshi-skin rug from him!! icon_evil.gif ).

Anyway, I learned long ago that I can't trust any of them, especially Yoshi, (used to catch him eating the dog's food while the dog looked on pathetically!) when it comes to food. Everything always has to be placed in either the fridge, an cooled oven or the microwave or what was my mother's apartment just to make sure they don't get their greedy little tongue's onto anything. Heck, the oldest cat loves bread and when hubby and I were first married we learned to put the bread into the fridge immediately upon bringing the groceries into the house! She, more than once, ripped through the bread bag to nibble at the bread within 15 minutes of us coming home from the supermarket!

I'd say if you could go to a bakery or supermarket that has a bakery dept., get a plain cake and decorate it yourself. Unfortunately there's little else you can do. Sorry again.

Years ago on the way to a Halloween party. I left the window open on my car while I went in my friends house to get her. I had a hatchback with the sheet cake on the back deck. The barn cats got in the car and lick the icing on the cake. I took the cake to the party but told everyone it was pre-licked and to eat at their own risk. We all worked at the same horse farm, so had shared numerous meals with these cats over the years.

Well as long as your cat's an "indoor only cat" and is up to date with shots, I wouldn't worry too much.

Not that I encourage sharing food and drink with pets, but I wonder how many times I've gotten off the couch or away from the computer and haven't caught my cats with their noses (and tongues) in my cup of water, because I know if caught them quite a few times!! Thank goodness, no illnesses to speak of. icon_biggrin.gif

chakkakin, the joke is that some people believe the 'meat' in Chinese food isn't beef or poultry but cat (some people have even said dog). It's not the funniest joke, but that's where it comes from. So by asking, "Anyone for Chinese?" the meaning was hmarie_73 was so upset with her cat, she was going to kill it for licking the cake/icing.

By the way, my husband and I have friends (a vegetarian couple) and whenever we'd order Chinese food (meatless, of course), she'd still pick up every piece of tofu and ask her hubby (at the time, boyfriend), "Is this cat?". Got pretty annoying very quickly, but 16 years later my hubby and I still ask that question to eachother every so often because it was that memorable!

Oh, and just because we're on the subject, you might get a laugh seeing this:

edited to remove the Cat in My Chicken Chow Mein tune as someone found it too offensive (sorry). I just Googled it to find it anyway as it's prevalent on the internet. I often wished they had come up with a version regarding Italian Barese (from which I'm descended). The joke is that they'll eat anything and my hubby and I have had a private joke (not dirty!!) about that and we just recently found out his paternal grandfather is Barese!! Now I get to use the joke on him too (though I don't know if his great grandmother made squirrel like mine did! icon_surprised.gif )

to the original post...

you mentioned that walmart is doing a round cake with cherries and whipped cream... if this is not too late, i'd have them ice the top PLAIN. at home roll up a few red fondant balls for cherries dipped in red glitter. that shouldnt take too long, but of course it may already be too late for that suggestion.

another thought for future reference is the sara lee frozen pound cakes or pepperidge farm frozen frosted cakes. i know it doesnt beat scratch, but if you're ever in a serious time pinch again, you have those options. then you can always add a little personal touch at home.

Oooh, I love those Pepperidge Farms frozen cakes! Not as good as scratch - true, but for a 'supermarket cake', I love them.

NEWTODECORATING, that was an old e-mail that I must have received at least four times in the past five years! I still thing it's cute, though the heart of it really isn't funny; as you said, "so wrong".

My cat used to do that until he drank one quarter of a cup of jack and coke that way (he loves soda, go figure).

He looked up and started to wobble and then kind of walked around before laying down. I picked him up and put him on the bed and watched him to make sure he wasn't too sick and he slept it off. DRUNK KITTY! I think he had a hangover the next day too because he hid under the bed (which he never does) and he drank his own weight in water. Haha, poor thing!

Oooh, the poor thing! You (or would that be he?) are lucky he didn't get alcohol poisoning. They're so light weight * that they can easily succumb. But then again, if he learned his lesson and he's okay, maybe it was a good thing. icon_surprised.gificon_confused.gif Hmmm....

(* yeah, lightweight. I had a miniature schnauzer not too long ago and my middle cat was heavier than him! His name is Yoshi, but his nickname is "fat boy". We say it with love, but he really should lose a few; then again, who am I to talk. icon_lol.gif )

I always refrigerate my cakes,if for some reason you can't , then keep it in a cake box and put it in a room where the door will close tightly. That will keep the cat out.

Promise me something...when you calm don, and all is over, and you have delivered the cake ( whatever you decided to use)...PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE peomise you will have a good laugh about the who whole thing! I can't help it. I know it was a ton of work, and you were upset, but cake disaster stories where animals are involved ALWAYS make me laugh! I'm such an animal lover, and I just find humor in all they do! You have to wonder what was going through his little kitty brain when he was licking that icing ( besides , "oh, man this is yummy!")
Try NOT to make Moo Shu kitty for your next meal...lol...the fur will only get stuck in your teeth...lol...Please forgive me for this but...HAHAHAHAHAHA.....it really IS a funny story! I hope you WILL laugh about it one day...phew...I really TRIED not to laugh as long as I could...
