Wish I had some ideas, but I'm in the same boat - it's my husband's BDAY on the 24th! I'm going to have to keep my eye on this thread!

I have seen a lot of toolbox cakes being made - looks too involved for me as I am a novice, but maybe you'll have more luck.

I did a tool belt cake for a retirement. If you are interested, pm me and I can give you the details.

I have done a fishing cake before...I found a fish cake kit at our local cake store...but they sell them at kroger too...I drew a man in a boat with a fishing pole about to catch the fish. You could write something cute. I have also done the Wilton football cake...and it turn out cute too. I feel like men are hard to come up with good ideas!!! I hope you will post a pic when it is done!
