I also do a lot of 3D art and you must understand that people are willing to pay for good art. I looked on the internet and looked at a hundred differerent sites with 3D art and then I desided which ones were up to my talent and used what they charged or at least close to it depending on where they are located. We are located in Arizona and I have not seen anyone that does the same kind of art that we do and so we decided to charge $150.00 for 3D art and then buy the slice. So we let people know right from the begining that if they want art on the cake it will cost them an extra $150.00 over and above what they will pay per slice. My thought is do you not have to pay a plumber or electrician a huge sum of money when they do you a service. Yes! why? Because they are specialist in their field. We are specialist in our field and some think just because it is cake that it is some how different. I don't think so. If they want something really special they will pay for it. Don't sell you talents so cheap you are worth more. Look at what Duff sells his for... When I tell people about the cost of art they don't even blink an eye and those that do you can calm them down by telling them if they know a couple of months in advamce then they can make payments or just save up for it. Wow I guess I better get off my soap box sorry for the sermon guys... LOL I feel very strong about how little we feel about are craft and talent. I think you are very talented and you should go for it.

I decided to do something similar. My area hasn't caught on to my 3D cake making, yet! I decided that I would just tell my customers that my sculpted cakes START at $50...that is just a basis that I go off of and then I add amount of time I know I will need to work on it...for the actual decorating. I figure I am not going to charge under that for cutting up any kind of cake.
good luck!

I charge around $5 / serving. If someone puts a carved cake on top of a regular cake that didn't require carving, I only charge the higher price for the carved cake, not the plain cake. I hope that makes sense. For instance, in my photos, there is the Birthday Party Dog cake. It served about 25 and I charged the lady $85 for it.

Everyone will have a different opinion on pricing, and a lot of factors go into it, but I would have to say that only adding $20 to your normal price for carving a cake is on the low side.

I start all of my 3D pricing at $3/serving. and this serving is figured on how much cake I had to make, not just how many servings they are getting in the end. Lets say I baked a 12x18x2 cake (52 servings) but By the time I stacked and carved I was down to 40 servings. I figure my price at 52x$3 = $156 starting price. If I think it will be more work I up my price per serving, but this way gives me a good starting point and I feel pretty comfortable with it.

i do similar to leila
i figure out what size cake im going to have to make before carving, then take the normal price for that and times it by 3 or 4, depending on details. If a customer calls i collect all the details and tell them i will call them back shortly so i can figure it out, rather then pull a price out of my head. and regret it later.
