Can You Use Anything Else Other Than A Wonder Mold

I am going to make a barbie cake I think for my daughter, but the only place I can find on (wonder mold ) is online.... Is there anything else I can use that will work and maybe cheaper even.....Thanks
That is a great idea I never thought of that....do you think 2 would be enough or should I use 3?
A friend just made one using the large glass measuring cup/bowl from Pampered Chef (it's like pyrex). It is practically the same shape as the wondermold - looked a little better, actually. You can also use any pyrex glass bowl to bake cakes in - you just may need to sculpt just a little to get the right shape. Also, Better Crocker makes a "bake & fill" type of cake pan set that works well and you can get at stores like Walmart or Kmart - just have to look around a bit.

If you use regular cake layers, you would probably want 3. If you use a real Barbie, you need to have the cake tall enough to cover her up to her waiste.
I have a Hamilton Beach Mixer on a stand that came with metal mixing bowls....have used the two smaller ones for baking domed/cone shape cakes for years...the smallest is perfect for the small pick (the younger Barbie).
hahahah that pic is funny....
Hey I was putting dishes away tonight and duh.. I have glass ware that I use for mixing that I read on the bottom that is oven ware also, I have just never used them, they are made by anchor and I have a 1qt, 1.5qt and I beleive the larger one is 2.5qt I just have to see which one of the larger 2 could work then trim a bit cuz they are alittle wide than tall...but it could work....I just hope they cook well, can I cook at a lower temp to make sure it cooks well all the way thru.....
Thanks again for all your help.
I like using my pyrex bowls for baking, I just used my little one last week and it has a perfectly rounded bottom, I will most likely be using it soon for a doll cake.
TIP---I use the wonder mold and Mattel Barbie's (trade mark) legs are always too long and they are a bit pricey for a cake... and I always have a hard time finding doll cake pics..... sooo......
I go to the dollar store and get a fake one... then I pop the legs off!! you should see the looks everyone gives when the birthday girl goes to pull out the doll and she has no legs. . everyone laughs...
Am I the only one who does this?? Am I crazy?
I used the wilton wondermold that I bought at michaels with the 40% off coupon for about $7.00 and used a Cinderella doll that I popped the legs off worked perfect and the legs when back on and the doll was fine.
3-4 layers carved work as well as the wondermold. I use both depending on the size of the gown and number of guests.
when I use the wondermold, I still use a 3" layer under it to make it high enough to accomodate an 11 1/2" doll .

Nope ... not crazy!! I have always done the same - but I keep the legs and put it all back together for the birthday girl.
I've never liked the idea of digging holes in cakes to insert a doll and picks are hard to come by in Australia.
BTW, I bake in a "Dolly Varden" tin - don't know if they're available over there, but they are like a taller Wonder mold - perfect for doll cakes.
i used two pyrex bowls stacked one on top of the other and carved just a little bit. it worked great and i was able to stick the whole barbie in the cake all the way to the cake board.
OzCookie,
you should be able to get doll picks from the cakedeco site
(in melbourne) and Sparty's usually have them.
