Must be a common thing- I can leave a steak on the counter and my 110 lb chocolate lab Sam wont touch it. I leave a chocolate cake and I'm scratching my head trying to figure out where it went?

OMG, I am glad I am not the only one who has this problem. My half breed German Shep loves my pound cakes. I don't have doors to my kitchen so every time I go to the bathroom, I have to put my cakes up so my cake thief doesn't grab a bite.

This just happened to me...my one and half year old golden (who I love to death) ate my undecorated (thank goodness) slab that I had gotten up early thismorning to bake so I would be ahead of the game today. I had put her in her crate while I went to the gym to keep the cake safe...came home let her out of her crate and got a phone call (another order) and she decided "hey Mommy is busy and not looking so I'll eat what I can before she notices". Not lov'in her to much right now!!
It's just comforting to know I am not the only one this happens too!!! icon_cry.gif

Cakes and pets dont mix. So far my dogs havent gotten the taste for cake, but the cat is another story. I had just finished decorating a huge cake and set it aside on the counter behind me, when my cat who likes to hang out on the very top of the kitchen cabinets at the ceiling decided to leap down, jumping right center into my cake. She must have thought it was something solid to jump down on. So not only was my cake destroyed by at big cat diving into it, but i had cake and icing trails all over from the cat running out of the kitched trying to kick the mess of herself. What a nightmare! icon_lol.gif

I had a large sheet cake in the back of my car to take to a party. I stopped at a friend's house to pick her up and I left the car windows open. The barn cats got in and licked the icing off the cake.
I know grammar, syntax and I can spell -- I just can't type!

This cracks me up. My cat likes to lounge above the cabinets too and I can just picture him hopping right onto a cake! So far I've been lucky though. But only because I've been lucky enough to catch the little sneak before he actually reached any cake. Even a fondant covered dummy piqued his interest last night.
Dog on the other hand doesn't really care about the finished cakes on the counter. He just hangs around right outside the kitchen (it's where I make him stay while baking!) and watches while the mixer is running. He knows that's his best bet for getting something tasty! Though he could easily reach the counter, he has never tried.

My dog does exactly the same!! You think ypu're pushed it far back enough that they can't possibly reach it! And how come we NEVER catch her at it - we return to a room and she's sat, good as gold, no traces of crumbs etc. but the cake has a big hole in it. She blames the cat.

Moving it out of reach never works around here...I catch my dog (short hair pointer / lab mix) on top of the table, the counter, wherever cake is ALL THE TIME! She is not allowed in the house during baking & decorating anymore. The thing that baffles me is that I never hear her get up, even if I am 5 feet away and there are no chairs pulled out!!??!!

I too have experienced one of our dogs getting into some chocolate that my son left out in his room one day; however, soon after the incident, in reading a number of articles and hearing people talk on the radio and on TV, I became aware that dogs eating chocolate is not only serious but toxic and depending on the amount of chocolate, weight of your dog, and type of chocolate that was "stolen", chocolate can kill our dear pets. While taking a quick look on the Net just now, I read a really good article by the emergency vet on Animal Planet, Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald. It is titled, "Chocolate Poisoning in Dogs". If you have a minute please won't you read it-

After becoming aware of this danger, my husband and I both lock our baking and candy making chocolates in plastic containers that are dog proof. Any food item in the house that consists of chocolate is stowed in cabinets the dog can't reach or locked away. We really love our dog. He is a member of our family and it would be the worst thing to happen if some of our chocolate ingredients or chocolate products would be a factor in killing him prematurely. I just wanted to share this information with any of the wonderful bakers or candy makers on this site that have a dog and might not be aware of how serious it is to let your dog eat chocolate.

Even after reading these posts and knowing my dogs love of sweets, he still managed to steal on of my Hallooween cookies last night. I chased him around the dinning room tabler trying to get it back (like I would still use it!), and he's running around with a stick hanging out of his mouth and managed to eat the whole thing by the time I caught him!

I have a black lab who lives outside now because of that behavior. He never ate cake but he was very fond of chili and red jello. Yes chocolate is very toxic to dogs but if this is the first and only time your pooch should be ok.

Sorry about your cake, but I must tell my story. At the time I was really PO but now I can laugh about it.

During the Xmas holdiays last year, I had a LOT of orders. I needed to have some go out soon, and needed space to cool them. So I put them outside in my backyard where I have a picnic table, with a bowl turned over them, figuring that it will cool off from the cold.

I returned 1 hour later to find that the squirrels had moved the bowl and eaten into all the cakes that I had placed outside.

All my dogs (and pretty much all that are tall enough) are famous counter surfers. I never, ever, leave any food on the countertops unless it is in a rubbermaid container because I know they can reach. I'll put things in the microwave, in the oven, or on top of the fridge. As far as I'm concerned, it is the humans fault when a pet eats something left on the counter. As the human, it is your job to ensure it's safety. An animal can't understand and won't resist the temptation. I stupidly left a tray of cookie dough waiting to go in the oven on the counter, left the room for no more than 30 seconds, and came back to half a tray of cookie dough. My fault and we had fewer cookies. A pet shouldn't be made to live outside because the human makes mistakes.

Yes, chocolate can be deadly to dogs, but I wouldn't worry about a chocolate cake. The amount of chocolate in that isn't enough to do damage, unless it was a very small (5 lb) dog. If a dog eats baking or dark chocolate, I'd worry. My smallest dog is 50 lbs, and he would need to eat about 2 lbs of M&M's for it to make him sick.

Buddy isn't allowed in the kitchen area ever. I have an open floor plan ...kitchen/living room...no walls(ugh).

My mixers sit on the island counter. When I'm decorating, I go more to the livingroom area of the island.

Buddy will sit right beside me as long as I have a decorating bag in my hand. When I get up, he gets up. He keeps a close watch on that bag...going from one end of the island to the other, never going pass "the line".

While he sits beside me, with an eager look on his face and trying to be still, I will raise the bag in the air, slowly squeezing out a line of icing and count, "1, 2.....3!" and his tongue comes out at that time to begin lapping the suspended trail of icing.

He's a good dog. He likes sweets. I would still be bugged if he ate the stuff while my back was turned.
