Hi,

I got my first real, paying, order for a cake today. I am soooo excited! A friend of mine called me up. I am doing a cake for her daughter's birthday party this Sunday!!!! She asked me if I had any business cards that she could give in case any of the Mom's asked where she got the cake. I haven't really thought of business cards or a name yet and I don't know where to begin. I am only going to do cakes. I would eventually like to get into wedding cakes as I get better, but for now I think I will just focus on birthdays and special occasions. My name is Jodi Abbott and I live in LaSalle, Ontario. I think I would like something that is catchy and easy to remember. Please help! I'm not coming up with anything I like!

Thanks

just wanted to wish you luck, I'm having the same problem you are, I beginning to think that naming my business is more difficult than making the cake itself.

I will think on this one tonight, Jodi and hopefully will have something by morning......

You might want to think about these things as you are trying to come up with a name. What's your favorite color? Do you have kids? What are their names? Do you have a "favorite" grandparent or someone who might have influenced your love of baking and decorating when younger? Do you want something "cute", something "glamorous" or .......... ????

For me, I am just starting out.....but have come up with the name - - - - A BLESSED BAKERY. I am a Christian and want to portray that somehow in my name. I like using the name "bakery" in my title (pondered the idea of confections, cakes & confections and a few other ideas). But I liked "bakery" the best. I want to do cakes, cheesecakes, cookies and cookie bouquets. I am pretty pleased with the name I came up with.

I'll think about this one for you....and write in the morning.....good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions so far...please keep them coming. I've always thought of using

Piece of Cake Decorating,

but now I am not so sure.

Cakes by Design

has also crossed my mind, but I am not really sold on that one either.

I have two beautiful daughters and a very supportive husband. My favorite color is burgundy and I guess you could say my Grandmother influenced my love for cake decorating. She always made us beautiful birthday cakes. Her name was Joy, which is also my daughter's middle name.

It is really hard to come up with a name.

Thanks again to those who have posted.

Party Cakes by Jodi Abbott (this is my business name -- minus the Jodi Abbott and add my name). I like "party cakes" because it is a play on "patty cake, patty cake, baker's men..." and it implies more than just wedding cakes. I also do cookies, but that hasn't seemed to be a hindrance to orders just because my name doesn't have "cookies" in it. I also considered "Becky's Cake Creations" and "Becky's Confectionary Creations," so those would work for you too with your name.

Good luck!

Jodi's Piece of Cake?
And people will remember your name more than the word cake or bakery ..any time I've been to a bridal show, I hear "So-and-so told us to look for Karen".

I like having your name in the business name...it really promotes a sense of ownership (and if you do it, you get such a rush seeing your name on business cards).

Let us know what you choose...isn't it frustrating? It seems so easy, but then you change your mind again and again and again.

Karen
Karen's Just Dessert (i like it when people say.....oh, i get it...get your "just dessert")

I don't have a "business" specifically, but I use Cakes by DZign. A little play on words since my initials are DZ.

From a marketing standpoint, when someone looks in the phone book for cake, that's the first word they will look for. Words starting with A are listed first (duh) . Keep it simple.

Good luck!

How about "Piece 'A Cake" or "Just Desserts" (which would allow you to branch out into other items, if you eventually wanted to). And if you want to order some real nice business cards at low cost, I found a website that I absolutely love. I get everything from them, and they run specials all the time offering stuff for FREE. It's www.vistaprint.com although I don't know if they offer their services to Canada or just in the US. That wouldn't be very smart, but who knows.

Congrats - and good luck!!!

What about something like:

Joyful Celebration Cakes
J.J. Cake Shoppe (sounds more upscale)
Abbott's Cake & Bake (if you'll be doing more than just cakes, gotta keep that in mind!)

I'll keep thinking about it!
