Hi all,

I made a huge cake this past weekend, and I was too lazy to put in the heating core so it didn't bake. Lesson learned.

However, I didn't want to throw away the baked cake so I decided to make cake balls. Does anyone else out there think that cake balls look and taste like a three year old took his/her cake, dunked it in their milk and smashed it up? I had a hard time looking at them...

Everyone else, basically, enjoyed them, but maybe I did something wrong? I put in two cups of cake crumbs, plus two squirts of milk along with 2 Tbsp. each of powdered sugar and cocoa.

Thanks for your advice!

p.s. you can see the cake balls in my photo gallery around my chocolate cake.

Oh WOW that cake looks delicious! The cake balls also look yummy. Did you not like the texture or taste? I don't add anything to my cake balls. I use a flavored simple syrup wash on cake so the scrapes are really moist and I just roll them into balls and cover with ganache. They are so good!

It sure looks good. I love cake balls. I put chocolate chips in mine and they are really good. I haven't added nuts yet and probably won't til someone asks for it.

I made them once and like you I thought it tasted like someone chewed up their cake and spit it out again!! I think I may have added too much liquid.......I did the two shots like it said....but I think it was too moist...I dunno.......I will have to try again and just monkey around with it. I've heard of people mixing cake crumbs with icing and then rolling that up.......now that sounds good to me!

I am totally a texture person, and cannot bring myself to eat these things. I made them once, tasted them, and have never made them again. If the texture isn't right, I just can't eat it.

I guess it's a personal taste thing.....I am taking orders for LOTS of these for xmas!!! I haven't tried the recipe with the frosting yet...not sure I will tho since the other one seems to be a hit with everyone here (specially when I used amaretto!!)

lilsis, how about sharing your receipe? (amaretto) Details, Details, Details. I've never made cake balls, but I don't mind trying something that is requested over and over. Yours must be delicious.

My cake balls, always turn out too sweet. I had a few family members tell me the chocolate was a bit much. What else can I use instead of the sweet candy melts to dip my cake balls in? I like the finished look the chocolate gives them, but the taste is too rich.

I have to say I am with all of you who don't like cake balls. Now, I am not knocking anyone else's, but when I personally made them I felt they were mushy and grainy. Yes, that whole smashed up cake thing. Blech. I'd rather just make truffles. Fortunately I never have cake scraps so it's not an issue. I wish I could figure out what to do to make them as yummy as you guys do. Almost everyone here is insane over them... I want to be too! (I faked it once, but only once!) icon_lol.gif

I made cake balls for the first time yesterday. I hated them. The texture was like eating cookie dough. icon_sad.gif

For the amaretto cake balls - I put the cake (lately i've been baking cakes JUST for cake balls!), add 1-2 tbsp of powdered sugar...start blending...add little bit of amaretto at a time ...blend until mixture just starts sticking to beaters....that's it...I used a vanilla cake with the amaretto....VERY BIG HIT!!
