Needing Ideas For Cake Filling
Decorating By babyblues1520 Updated 26 Aug 2007 , 2:49pm by babyblues1520
I'm going to be making an alien spaceship cake for my sons 5th birthday next month and was wondering if there was an ideas as to what to use as a filling for the dome part .....?
I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you looking for a different filling other than regular buttercream? What flavor of cake are you going to make?
BTW, Welcome to CC and I can't wait to see your cake, so be sure to upload pics!!

Let's see if I can tell you want i'm doing with out sounding crazy.....
I'm going to be making the space ship and was wanting something that when you cut into it it looks kinda like there was aliens inside and you cut into them......it's going to be part chocolate and part white cake.....with store bought frosting in chocolate and white......to tint black and green....with different types of candies on it..like m&m's tootsie rolls and sour gummies...etc...my husband is going to make aliens for the top and around the outside out of MMF...anyway back to the filling part......I was thinking of something like jello but thought that would make the cake nasty....then thought of getting vanilla pudding and tinting it a red or lime color......but wanted something that was a little less messy...as I have a 2 yr old also.....so was thinking I would ask here for some ideas as to what to use.....BOY I hope this all makes since to whoever is reading this...... anyway I was watching the FOOD Network cake challenge and seen where one person had used a ganache in a think layer along with a cookies n cream type and something else between the cake layers....so thought that would be good but NEVER even heard of it until I found this site and then off that show....not sure what it is so if you have any ideas and then also can tell me what ganache is that would be great.....
Is the filling supposed to ooze out like goo when you cut into it? or are the aliens supposed to bleed?
I am a tad confused.
I have 3 sons so I know about grossness (LOL) sad to say.
this cake here is kinda like what i'm making...... this cake was posted bydellluz
as far as the filling goes as long as it doesn't make the cake soggy. the gross factor is better....but i was just going to make a dome in a round pyrex bowl or stainless steel and place on top of a cake baked in either a pie type pan or just a 9x round cake pan.....and take and cut out part of the dome to add the filling to
I'd do a pudding filling, Vanilla with green food coloring, or even pistachio pudding it's already green. And it's not too messy.

How about a green pudding filling with alien "body parts" in it? The body parts could be gummy bears or something like that. So when they get a slice they will be surprised to get guts. Not sure if that is too gross. Just thought I would throw it out there. Good luck!
Welcome to CC! Check out the recipes section for fillings, there are lots of good recipes there. Ganache is made by mixing hot cream and chocolate and stirring until it's smooth. It can be chilled and whipped, or cooled and used different ways. You should read about its uses before you start, to find the one that fits you best.
I noticed you said you're using store bought icing...do you mean decorator's icing or something like Duncan Hines Frosting? You really can't decorate well with the off the shelf frostings. There may be a way to add 10x sugar to make it work, but I don't know. You should really make your own buttercream icing. It's really easy and yummy.
Thanks for the idea with the alien parts aka gummy bears in the pudding...that maybe what I do....I just didn't want something that was going to make the cake soggy.....as for the icing it's the Duncan Hines Frosting...I was thinking of making the stabilized whipped cream icing....But I'm trying to make it look as good as possible but be as easy as possible also... for the fact that I am having to make two different cakes for my two boys which one turns 5 on the 20th of next month ( cake alien ship) and the other will be turning 2 on the 27th( Blue's Clues) and I'm due to have my 3rd child (a girl) on the 29th.....ALL in sept. so trying for as easy as i can get.......
ok another question....IS there anything that can be added to the frosting I have to make it thinner....and easier to use......such as sweet condensed milk, cool whip, milk, heavy cream, etc.....
i'm a huge fan of curds....what about lime curd, you could call it alien brain ooze, or something like that. i'd use it for the white cake portion.
happy baking,
sally
Yeah I like the Idea of Lime Curd as well. Neither Curd or Pudding should make the cakes soggy. I use both all the time, and have never had that problem. I know you have alot going on but why don't you make your own butter cream? It will be much cheaper than the canned stuff and tastes better. And you can make it in advance so you don't have to push your self all in one day.
By the way Where do you live. Maybe there might be someone in your area that can help you just incase you get overwhelmed with everything going on.

P.S. Good luck on the birth of your newest. What a Blessing.
well I have already gotten the frosting (Duncan Hines) and the cakes to use...the only things I have to get is the decor. stuff.....and what ever to use for filling......I was also thinking of using like a cheese cake filling and just giving it a tint.....but thought that that would be way to rich.....not sure what a curd is????

I live in the middle of no where closest town is 35miles...... ......

I accidentally discovered how to make decorator icing out of store bought canned chocolate frosting. I was out of cocoa and needed a batch of chocolate buttercream for a cake "right now." The only chocolate anything I had in the house was a can of chocolate fudge frosting. I dumped it into the bowl of my KA, added 1C butter flavor crisco, 1T water and started the mixer. It looked fairly awful at that point, but I started adding powdered sugar, 1 Cup at a time. I kept adding sugar alternately with 1T water till I used the whole 2 pound bag, and a total of 3 oz water, plus 1T of my almond/butter/vanilla flavor blend. It was almost perfect! Not a really DARK chocolate, but acceptable. I have done this several times since then and it is really a lot easier sometimes than adding cocoa powder. Worth a try in a pinch, in any case.
Hey BabyBlue
If you have some pudding (vanilla) you could tint it green, which will tint the kids green...don't they love green mouths? The pudding won't hurt the cake any and its just oozy enough for the gross factor. Do you have any mini marshmellows? Alien Brains are always mini marshmellows so swirl some of them in the pudding. Hearts are Red Hots. Intestines are gummy worms... Does this help get your mind spinning in the right direction?
Happy baking

Thanks everyone for all the cool ideas......I'm sure with all them I can come up with something he will really love....I'll post pics when I get it done and let everyone know just what I came up with........that is if I can get it frosted... ......Kim
