it was an off brand....and i have found it to be gritty as heck!

i bought a bunch of it too!

i really wanted the 50 pound bag of , i think it was dominos(?).....but i wasn't feeling my oats that day to lift it.

i'm gonna put some C and H in it and try to salvage the batch....

The best powdered suger I've found is Krogers brand. I like it better the Dominos. It's easier to use and cheaper. But you can't buy it in big bags. So when it goes on sale, I buy a lot.

I would try and take that sugar back. Or atleast what you haven't used. If you can't salvage the batch you've made, I'd just save that batch for practice cakes or dummy cakes if you think it's not good to eat. I wouldn't throw it out or anything.

I threw out four full batches of BC using Kroger PS. It had an aftertaste that was a little bitter-not up to my usual standards. That was the 4lb bag though and maybe they use too much cornstarch per bag to keep it from sticking together. I just know I won't do that again. I only use C&H or Dominos.

If it's gritty, try to add a little more liquid and beat it longer before you put in the C&H. It might help. That's so frustrating!

I bought some of that. It was gritty when I used distilled water as my liquid. MY last two batches of BC, one chocolate, one almond, I used chocolate creamer and rice milk respectively and they weren't gritty. So maybe try another liquid.

I love te PS from Sam's, I think it is called Baker's and Chefs's, makes my icing very smooth and not gritty at all.

Sorry you are having a problem with it.

I would take the bags back to Sam's, especially the one that is gritty. I use the Baker's Chef from Sam's with no problem. You may have just gotten a bad bag and I would hope they would take your complain serious.

I use the Baker's and Chef's and have no problems with gritty icing. I actually prefer Domino, but can't afford to use it when I use so much of it. I also like how the 7lb bag from Sam's has a zip top.

all I use is the bakers and chefs 7 pound bags of sugar from SAMs club....works great for me and I love the re-sealable zipper!!!! although when I use my big mixer, and I mean BIG mixer...I use the entire 7 pounds at once. perfect!

I'd take yours back though if your not happy with it

i think there must be varying amouts of beet sugar in this stuff....i think i musta got a batch with more....i'm taking it back...there was no fixing it today, even after i put equal amounts of C and H in there...

i go thru a lot of sugar each week, 60-100 pounds, i won't ever buy it again....i thought it might be the weather or something...made a batch of C and H...smooth as silk....it's too bad, i really liked the packaging....)*:

My MIL gave me several 7# bags of Baker's & Chef's sugar from Sam's and I HATED it! My icing was SO gritty, it was just nasty! Then I thought, I bet it's older than dirt (she tends to keep things forever), but I checked and they were new bags! I'm sticking with my $1.05 2# bag of Domino's from WalMart! That price is what's built into my pricing matrix, so no harm done! Some things I will not sacrifice and my 10x sugar is one!

I have got to start shopping at WalMart! I don't think there is a WalMart near me that has an actual grocery store, just some aisles of food stuff. I hope I can get PS there. I'm paying $1.97 for 2 pounds at the grocery store!

I also use the 7# bags and love them... never had a problem yet. We buy 10 bags at each visit there... people prolly think I'm nuts icon_smile.gif

one time i was shopping for the week (at the shop) at wal mart....my cart was heaped up with baking products....

one of the checkers that i knew, told me that one of the other checkers said....:doesn't she ever buy any meat or vegetables?"

GOOD LORD!...i guess she thought i was eating all that cake!!!

i know i'm chubby....but even someone who weighs 1000 pounds couldn't eat that much cake every week!

I use the Bakers's and Chef's from Sam's all the time. I have been using it for several years and never had any trouble. I love it because it never has lumps. I always have trouble with Domino's and lumps.

I have used the 7# Baker's & Chef's from Sam's for a long time. I have never had a problem with it. As soon as I get it home I get out my kitchen scales and weigh it out into 4# bags, ready to use when I make frosting. Our local Sam's does not have 50# bags or I'd buy that instead.

I use 7 lb bags of Dominos that I get at my local Sam's....$4.13 a bag. I haven't had any problems with grittiness.

I LOVE shopping at Sam's! Now I can't stand it when I don't buy enough and have to go to the regular grocery store for last minute cake supplies. icon_mad.gif

This is good to know! I'll have to re-up my membership to Sam's and see what other goodies I can find! However, I can buy 2# bags of Dominos at WalMart for $1.20/bag. I think that was why I stopped shopping at Sam's before....seems like I could always find it cheaper elsewhere?

That's a FABULOUS deal! Is that Domino's or that Baker's and Chef's brand? If it's Domino's I'm going to have to check into it at my local Sam's!

It's Bakers & Chefs... I've never had any problems with it, I don't sift it either... it's great!

Yeah, I've tried Bakers & Chefs and didn't like it at all....but I think I'll go by Sam's and check our local prices for Dominos! Thanks for the heads up about the great price though! I'm sure I'll be able to find my sugar there....and hopefully for less!

So, Is Domino's a 10x sugar? I use a store brand by me that's 10x but if i can get it cheaper at Walmart that'd be great.

dominos has 50 pound bags, bakers and chefs even tasted funky to me...it was pretty smooth the day i made it, but for saturday, i'm so busy...i make it friday night...by the time it sat overnight...it had the texture of tile grout.

i took it back last sunday, only Cand H for me from now on.

Wow! Nice prices! Up here in Manitoba, it's around 3.50 for a 2 pound bag, in most stores. icon_sad.gif

Yes, Dominos is 10x. I also thought Bakers & Chefs was SO gritty....couldn't eat it, had to throw it away. Isn't it weird how we can all use the same product and get different results!!!

Thanks, Good to know. That is very weird that we can all use the same product and get different results. I wonder if it has anything to do with what people mix it with. ex: different brands of shortening perhaps?

I also use the PS from Sam's and simply LOVE it, it is so much cheaper to buy it in bulk rather then the 2$ a bag for the Domino's brand I used before.

I use the Bakers and Chef from Sam's and have never had a problem with it. I buy it all the time. I would prefer to buy their 25 pound bag just because it is cheaper, but I don't have a way of storing it. The 7 pound has the zipper, but I buy the cereal container that has teh blue around the top from Walmart (I think it is a Rubbermaid or something like that) But it is clear with blue rubber around the top. Once I use about the first pound or two from a bag, the rest fits in there WONDERFULLY!!!
