How thick is too thick frosting???

I just posted pictures of my daughter's sweet 16 Volkswagon cake. The top of course is the 3-D car pan sitting on top of a 16''oval. My daughter said the frosting on the oval cake was too thick. Never thought I would hear a teen-ager complain about something being too thick and too sweet.! The frosting was about 1/2' thick on the oval cake and a little thicker than I normally frost my cakes. Back in April when I did my first wedding cake for my son's wedding, I was having major problems with the cake. I used the icing tip for the first time (wrong time to try out my new toys) and was just not getting results with getting it smooth. I talked to the caterer where the wedding was being held, and he told me to just keep adding frosting over frosting until I could get it to smooth out. He said that he normally puts between 3/4-1'' of frosting on his wedding cakes. I just thought that was a lot of frosting, but in order to get the wedding cake smoothed out, I had to put it on thick and finally got it smoothed out. In one of the cakes, you can see a hump that I could not get smoothed out, but all in all, I think it turned out nice. For those of you that do a lot of cakes whether it be a sheet cake or wedding cake, how thick do you frost your cakes? Thanks for your help. Janice

I use a medium/thick consistency on my icing for my cakes .. usually the only way I use thick icing is when I make my roses .. If you're having problems smoothing the icing on your cakes and it pulling up the cake crumbs or pulling up the cake, it's too thick.. hope this helps you some icon_smile.gif

I usually ice my cakes a 1/4" thick. It may get up to a 1/2" thick if I am trying to level a corner or something, but no more. I've had complaints too if the icing is a 1/2" thick of more, but you'll get more complaints if something doesn't look straight or level. thumbs_up.gif

I think you are talking about how thick you put it on the cake and not the consistency? If so, I do mine probably a little under half an inch. I just throw a big blob in the middle and start spreading it out and then I end up scraping some off twhen smoothing it out. Hope this helps!

Yes sls, I am asking how thick you put your frosting on, depth wise, not consistency of frosting. Thanks to all for your answers. Janice
