I have recently started a cake decorating course and am loving it. It is something that I would really like to get into but I feel as though the course is not enough for me as it is only 1 day a week. I want to do more but do not know where to start. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on how to get started.

My advice is go through the course all the way. I felt the same way that you did when I took it. But it will get better and then I would check around or even ask your instructor if she knows of or does any other classes. That is my Advice

If the class isn't enough ..get a few books and make a cake or two a week going by the books...donate to church gatherings ...retirement homes..schools..etc...get your practice in and also leave future potential customers remembering that nice person who gave them cake! Also to challenge yourself I reccomend staying with this forum and site and challenge yourself to enter our monthly contest! All that should keep you baking! Hope to have been some help!

i agree with KayDay. Keep doing the courses and do extra at home! We live in a small town where word gets around pretty fast. So I donated all of the class cakes and ones I did extra to the Bank, School where my kids go, police dept. where DH works, and the Sheriff's office also where DH works! They all loved them. Just remind them that they won't be free once classes are over! And give them a business card along with the freebie! Good Luck!

Go to your library and Barnes and Noble. Check out the books. I'm only in Wilton I, but I want to start learning about other techniques. I am experimenting with MMF right now.

And practice your roses and writing. I do it while I'm watching tv.

I am just starting out as well and I felt the same way about the Wilton Course I. I am in Course II now. The class along with the cakes that I am doing on the weekend it enough right now because it takes me longer to do a cake. And believe me word gets around fast!

My advise is also to find a Wilton instructor that you love because you will want to go to them for class. My instructor teaches other classes but I have to finish all three courses first. Willing to wait because she is great!

Thank you all so very much for your replies. I was so excited when I got an email saying that I had a reply from Cake Central ! You have given me the confidence to start making cakes and practice what I am learning in the classes. It is great to get advice from people who are doing cake decorating and are loving it.
