Awesome...I too will fax a letter today! Better in writing I think, only because there is then documented hard copy proof.
Kelly, thanks for all your hard work - I just called and spoke directly with Stephanie to voice my support with the hopes that a bill will be drafted!
Again - many thanks!

Just called, I hope I did that right, I have never done anything like that before!!!! Should I write also?

Need an idea for a press release/ story...
Im going to work on it later today (in all my spare time....ha! ) But the theme will definitely be the economy and how this law would help people.
Again, I'm going to try to move the bulk of my information over to TexasCottageFoodLaw.com as I think this thread has now moved beyond the scope of CakeCentral.com and I don't want it to take over the business forum
OMG!!! OMG!!! How could I have missed this forum. I would love to help also. What stops me is my inability to get a storefront. Where can I get the petition to sign it? Is it too late? I am totally in...
Thanks!
Sandra
Hi Sandra!
Here's the link to the website and petition. You'll find more info there:
http://www.texascottagefoodlaw.com/default.htm
BTW- not too late!
I think you should also focus on how it will help other business and weather or not the cities or counties would profit from this. I don't know that they would, but I think if you only focus on what it will do for the baker, that is not as good.
Of course this may have already been addressed.
my 2 cents
I will be posting a 'Facts' page on the other site soon (in all that "spare time" I keep talking about). One of the most interesting things I found out when calling and talking to regulators in states that have cottage foods laws - complaints of dirtyness or of food-borne-illness in the licensed residential kitchens are almost unheard of. A couple of people went so far to say that they "never" recalled getting a complaint about a licensed home kitchen.
So it's something that poses absolutely no public health threat, that people could be doing to keep themselves afloat, and it's illegal. Makes no sense.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that people baking out of their homes is something that poses "absolutely no public health threat" but I do hope this comes to fruition. And I hope there are stringent requirements regarding safe food handling and sanitation education.
Did Sen. Odgen's aide tell you when you should follow up to see if he will be willing to sponsor the bill? You may need to approach many legislators until you find one willing to sponsor such a bill.
hi,
i'm not from texas but i am willing to call. maybe if you get it passed in texas it will help us get it passed in alabama.
thanks for all your work
I've been so touched by out-of-state people wanting to sign the petition, call, and lend their support, but it was made clear to me in my meeting yesterday that our Texas lawmakers are really only interested in hearing from Texas residents, so I would ask out-of-staters to limit your support to mainly being the cheering squad for us
My brother signed, he is in California right now but only because he is in the AF, do you thnk thats ok?
He is, he had to do an absentee vote because he was in Dubai during the election but is registered in Harris county.
What kinds of topics do we need to include in our letters? I want to make it the most powerful it can be.
When I have mine letter together, I will be asking my coworkers to sign letters with their signatures as well. As I have read, I will be including physical addresses on each letter so that they know they are dealing with Texans.
Kelley, you are awesome!
Melissa
Go here to see who to contact, and a sample letter.
It is better if, in addition to using the ideas in the sample letter, you add your personal thoughts and feelings on how the law would help you and your family.

Hi Kelley!! I have a question, might be like a "duh" kinda question, but better safe than sorry, right...Should I send my letter to Sen. Ogden or my local rep. I live in Harris County. If he receives the mass mail for this bill he will know how important this is for us, but if I don't send it to my local rep. how will they know? Do you know what I mean. I think I just confused myself.
Thanks a bunch!!
Sandra
Since we have Senator Ogden's attention at the moment (I hope!) I would say address the letter to him, but cc: your own Senator and Rep. We need to bring this issue to the attention of every single lawmaker.
I wrote my letter!!! I would've sent it a few weeks ago, but I figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. One of my assignments for my government class was to write a letter to any member of government (local, state or fed) and she's grading them, then she's going to mail them for us. Now I just need to decide on another issue for my second letter.
Kelley, I mentioned you in my letter, I hope you don't mind. I just wanted to make sure Sen. Ogden knows I am writing in direct support of the law you proposed to his aide.

Perfect!
In fact, if there are any of you out there who live in Senator Ogden's district, (Brazos, Burleson, Freestone, Grimes, Houston, Lee, Leon, Limestone, Madison, Milam, Robertson, Trinity, Walker and Williamson counties) it would be wonderful if you could call, write, or fax his office. It would especially help, I think, if he could hear from the people who he is representing. (You know, the ones who vote for him.)
Found my guy, Sen. Gallegos. He will be receiving a copy also. Thanks for the hope Kelley!!
I just sent letters to Senators Kay Bailey Hutchinson and John Cornyn and also to my Rep, Ralph M. Hall since they represent us who are here in Dallas. Thank you for posting such a well-composed letter for us to use as a guide for writing our own letters!!!
This reminds me of Jesus' parable of the persistent widow in Luke 18:
"For a while he was unwilling, but afterward the judge said to himself 'yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.'"
OK ladies... Let's wear out our lawmakers demanding legal protection!!!
