I created my first ever cake, a trial for my son's christening cake. I am not extremely pleased with how it worked out, the top of it is too big compared to the bottom, it is a bit lumpy and it looks too much like plastacine (sp?). I came up with the design myself (based on the theme of our son's room) which is probably obvious as the bugs are quite chunky!
An tips onmmaking the next one more successful would be greatly appreciated.
Now must go and carve it up, hubby is hungry!
Actually, I think the bugs are very cute and whimsical. If it were me--I would skip the fondant covering on the cake and use the bugs.
You are right--the top should be a bit smaller or the bottom larger--that way you can have the bugs "crawling" on the cake.
If you decide to go with buttercream, it would be fun to tint your icing light blue and then pipe on grass and smaller bugs. Maybe a sunshine--whatever is in your son's room (he is just adorable, btw!!).
I can't wait to see the finished product!!

That is a very cute cake. Yes the first layer does need to be smaller. The bugs turned out great!
I agree! Very cute bugs and the cake looks nice but would look better if the top were a bit smaller. Good job!

It definitely does not look like your first cake! And I love the "chunky" bugs! I can't wait to see the next one!
