www.cnn.com has a video of it - I'm at work so of course I can't see the video icon_sad.gif - but I saw a little of the cake and from what I can tell - it's an ugly cake! Yeah it's got diamonds and stuff thrown on it - but I've seen MUCH prettier things w/ fake pearl dust and gold dust and stuff - I know I've seen cakes by people here or by Collette or Toba that are more likely to be worth $20 million on their own - minus the jewels! (not that I would pay that for ANY cake!) This one just looks to me like some cake w/ a bunch of expensive jewelry thrown on it.........

I agree, that's one big ugly frou-frou cake, but the jewelry is fantastic! Janice

That cake looks like my kids just took all my fondant scraps and piled it together and put costume jewlery on it. Not as impressive as winning $20 mil in the lottery.

That is the ugliest cake that I have ever seen. It doesn't even make sense to me. I could see if it were jewels, but it is rings and earings and stuff.

I guess I put that is the category with the diamond underwear....why?

See, that one is actually creative and pretty. Like someone took time and effort to make it.

OMG!!!!!! You were all saying it was so ugly, but I honestly did not beleive it could be THAT ugly. That thing looks like someone was just learning how to work with fondant and did not have a teacher, tutor, or even a video to learn from! I will never look at any of my own cakes and call then hideous again (just because the buttercream is not as smooth as I want, or a flower did not turn out perfect).

Just goes to prove that money does not necessarily buy good taste icon_biggrin.gif and just because something is expensive, does not make it a luxury item.

I have learned in life that a good luxury item is usually finding that last roll of toilet paper when I thought I was out and can't get to the store, or when I have a cake order, no time for the store, and I find that half roll of Viva I didn't know was in the back of my cake closet. Better yet, a real luxury item for me right now is batteries for my camera icon_biggrin.gif

Wow! That is an ugly cake!! The jewelry is dazzling, but the cake itself, well, let's just say it's not to my taste!

It look like a Flamingo Dancer's dress.. but the jewelry is beautiful.
total of 300 Karat of diamonds on that cake. Actually I think the cake design is fine. I would not call it ugly. I have seen more ugly ones on this site, to be blunt about it. icon_smile.gif

Don't forget guys, it's for an event, it's an example only - not someone's wedding cake or whatever. It's a 'promotional item'. A 20 million dollar one....wow.

I just wish I could see it. I still haven't seen it yet, but saw on the event website where it 'premiers' at 6pm tonight in California. Maybe then they'll have more pictures so I can actually see it! icon_smile.gif

Here's the website for the event on Oct. 22nd - http://www.weddingsinthegrandtradition.com/event.html

I don't think the cake was ugly.

I don't think the design of the cake had enough oomph to sustain the brilliance of the jewelry. Neither complimented the other.

It looks to me like they were aiming for a different way to showcase the beautiful jewelry. The cake could have been prettier, but I think it was more about the jewelry than the cake, and calling it a $20 million cake is a gimik to get people to pay and see it.

I saw it on the news just now and from what I could see it was a pretty wedding cake with a lot of jewelry on it. To me the jewelry looked out of place but other than that it was ok.

I think the cake is pretty neat. Not necessarily what I would choose if I were getting married all over again, but nonetheless very pretty. Lots of bling bling!! icon_lol.gif

The 20 million is referring to the jewelry obviously, not the cake. The cake doesn't look like anything spectacular to me an I highly doubt that it's creator is hanging around cc. A high price tag doesn't necessarily mean high quality and/or taste. Looks to me like the creator though a lot of frills was the way to show off the jewelry. The pic of the red cake in Japan was pretty but again, I doubt it's actually someone's weding cake either. Having lots of $ to spend doesn't insure good taste and we all know everyone has their own ideas of what's beautiful. This cake was just laughable to me.

I didn't think the cake was that bad. I DEFINATELY would want that entire cake (jewels and all) for my wedding. Did you notice that canary yellow ring? WOW.
