I have to do this air jordan shoe cake .It will be 13 inches long.Im figuring it will take at least 6 hours to make. Maybe more-I might be conservative on the time. Can anyone whos made a shoe and sold it let me know a general price??? Im thinking $75
im guessing you will be baking a 9x13 for this cake, i agree, $75 is a fair price but dont go any cheaper. at least you;ll know better for next time, the first time doing something its always hard to price out.
Well..... this year I have adopted a new pricing structure. Quote for what your time is really worth! You can always discount for "blank" reason but occasionally you will get what you are worth. This week I have to do 1 shoe with a shoe box and the bride agreed to $250!!!!!!! Granted this will not always be the case but I quote the real price and gage their reaction, if they are shocked I say "since you are ordering your wedding cake to we can give you a ________ discount......." This client also ordered a $748 wedding cake. Personally it was difficult to change to the idea that we are a custom bakery boutique and should get what the service is worth but when I tried it a few times it worked.
Keep in mind that the bigger the overall cost the better the cake must be!

The key to hitting these kinds of cakes out of the ball park (or off the basketball court) is THE DETAILS.
If you are a skilled decorator - I didn't look up any of your pics - $75 is entirely too little to charge for this.
I don't know where you are located (I'm just south of Cleveland) or what your market is, but I would charge around $250 and it would include a nicely decorated base board.
You can't plop an awesome cake onto a foil covered board. Totally cheapens it.

This kind of thinking will drive you NUTS! Make your prices and stick to them. You are giving someone a discount who is creating more work for you. Which means more time, materials, etc. Especially with sculpted cakes! They almost always take longer than you expect. If they can't afford you, they can't afford you...someone else can.
A$75 for this cake would only be a good price if you shopped, mixed, baked, decorated and boxed (assuming it wasn't delivered) in less than 2 hours. Any longer than that and you were working for less than minimum wage.
Atzamora you have to figure out what your costs will be, how long it will take you and what market rate in your area is for a cake of this nature. Nobody has a number that will be right because we don't know any of that info.
ACheck out McGreevyCakes (.com) she has a tutorial on a high top sneaker. The key to cakes like these are the details! In order to make them look nice you really have to put in that extra work, which equals a lot of time.
Any carved cakes take more time, so I charge more and shoe cakes take a lot of carving. Sometimes smaller details like stitching, shoe laces, the holes the strings go in, added texture, etc. take me more time then larger details plus you need to make a template, make sure everything is spaced evenly and accurately or it will look funny.
When carving I typically use a mudcake or something dense and I also make sure my cakes are chilled/partially frozen before I start carving.
Anyway, $75, in my humble opinion, is practically giving it away. I really think you will end up kicking yourself if you don't charge more.
Watch the McGreevy tutorial, you will get an idea of how long it took her to make the one shoe and you (it's sped up but I think she mentions how long it takes her and she's very talented and experienced) will understand (feel more comfortable) charging what it's worth. Good luck!
