I was just curious if the cookie icing recipe of Antonia74 tastes better than the Wilton recipe. I stay away from this type of icing because it gets so hard and I do not like the taste. Could flavor be added? Thanks!

I think it tastes great! It gets hard enough to stack cookies, but not rock hard so that you can't eat it.

It tastes awesome! It doesn't get THAT hard. I used it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and now that's all I'll probably use! You can add any flavoring you want. I added almond extract, it was so yummy! thumbs_up.gif

It's much better than Wilton's IMHO!

I just made this icing for the first time (with NFSC) and it was great - even without flavorings... but now I'm curious - besides almond extract, what else could you use to flavor it?

It's tastes great! I've used orange, lemon, almond, vanilla, creme bouquet, and coconut extracts to flavor mine. I really like the creme bouquet; it's not overpoweringly (not a word but oh well icon_rolleyes.gif ) sweet.

I've used lemon, almond, or vanilla in the past, and they were all good.

The most recent batch, I used 1/2 tsp each of Wilton Butter flavor and Creme Bouquet, and that was by far the best flavor I've ever made!

You can find the recipe for Antonia74's icing, as well as the method she uses to decorate her cookies, in the tutorial on the Articles tab, titled "How to bake & decorate cookies".

Creme Bouquet is a flavoring that a lot of people here use, it seems. Several people have posted about it recently, so the last time I was at the cake decorating store, I saw it and bought a bottle.

It smells like it would have a slightly citrus-y flavor, but doesn't seem like citrus in the finished icing. It just seems to enhance the flavor of the icing and make it crisp somehow, without giving it a distinct flavor.

That's probably as clear as mud, huh?

I didn't find it at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or any of the chain Hobby stores, but you can probably order it online from most of the stores that have cake decorating supplies.

hth!

It's SO MUCH better than Wilton's recipe, but it's even better with some vanilla and almond extracts in it. YUM-OH!!!!!!!!

Since I started using this icing... I have had more orders. It is the best. It hardens to a nice finish but has just that soft under layer that makes the texture just right. I have used almond instead of vanilla. Can't go wrong with Antonia74's icing on the NFSC.

I just made it without any flavoring and think it tastes like marshmellows/meringue cookies! icon_smile.gif I love the texture, too...

I love her icing. I use it as is, there isn't a need to really flavor it.

I'm not a fan of Creme Bouquet. It tastes like my old grandma's perfume no matter how little you use, even just a drop! I tried and tried with it, but eventually threw it out. I think it's something you either love or hate.

You have to buy the right brand of Creme Boq or it does not taste right. The best out there with great taste is majic line.

Thank you everyone for your great responses. I am doing a craft show this weekend and want to do some iced cookies and am having a delima as to which icing to use....I've used rolled buttercream and toba's before but I thought I might give this one a shot.

Thanks again!

If you plan to use Antonia's icing for this weekend, make sure you allow enough time for the icing to dry before you package the cookies. I usually am able to bag them about 24 hours after I finish the icing, but if it's humid outside, it sometimes takes longer.

Do you just leave the cookies out in the open to dry? Does the cookie get hard?

I have used Antonias icing a few times now and I just love it.It only takes over night here for them to dry so next time I do them for a customer I don't have to start so early. It is very dry here though..I leave them out on the table in the office .

Ok, I've got 10 dozen cookies to decorate tonight and I'll be using Antonio74's icing for the first time. What tips do you use to decorate? And do you have to put an outline first around the edge, then fill in? I've got mostly Halloween themed cookies to do. Any help would be appreciated!
