I am going to try to make a basketball cake for my nephew but I have a couple of questions. I bought the sports ball cake pan. I understand how to cut the top of one so it can "sit" on the cake board, but my question is do I need to use anything to support the other half of the cake that is going to be put on top of that one?

Also while I am on the subject, I will also be making a spiderman cake in a few weeks and have a question. How do I stack the Spiderman cake on a sheet cake? The spiderman cake pan is too small and I am going to need more cake.

Thanks,
Cecilia

Hi! For the ball cake - the top cake will stay put with buttercream without any problem. For the Spiderman cake - if it's a one mix pan you should be able to place it on the base cake without any problems. Just like a 2-layered cake - with buttercream in between.

hope this helps!

Yes..it should be fine.I would cut a little of the ball off so that it will sit flat and glue it down really good with buttercream.

If you plan to put the Spiderman on top of a sheet cake, you will want to support the weight with a few wooden dowels...just as if you were doing a regular stacked cake, with a cake board cut to fit under Spiderman. I would guess that 4 or 5 dowels would be enough, others may suggest more! Happy baking, Missey

Oh Sorry!!! I misunderstood the question.I didn't recall seeing that she was doing Spiderman.Yes...Missy is right!! You will have to dowel him to keep him sturdy.

If you are talking about the Spiderman cake pan, actually you can just put it directly on a sheet cake if you want to serve it that way. Otherwise as the ladies have suggested, for ease of serving if you pan to cut and serve both cakes separately, you will want to board him separately and put dowels or straws in the sheet cake to support the boarded cake. However if you are transporting it anywhere, you will need to put a small dowel through both so that the top cake doesn't slide off. IF you don't board the top cake, the centre dowel will not be necessary as the icing will hold the two cakes together like a 2 layer cake.
Make sure that you at least double board the sheet cake as a single board is not meant for this amount of weight and can cause buckling and cracking of your icing and cakes.
