I've been asked to make an unsual cake. Someone is getting out of jail and the family wants me to make a cake for his welcome dinner. I'd like to make something that reflects on him being free but I can't think of anything or should I just make a cake with just welcome home theme? Can you guys think of anything that'll be funny yet professional?? Thanks in advance for your help.

I think the "get out of jail free" card would be ADORABLE!! But I would check with the family first to see if they have a sense of humor about it...wouldn't want to offend anyone. Personally, I think it's a very clever idea!!!!! Too cute!

I take it the family was serious. Perhaps blue sky, stars, sun, moon, flowers, an edible picture of his family on the cake, things the person could not have enjoyed while in jail. A meadow with flowers and small animals. I don't know how ambitious this is going to be. Flowers and ruffles. Good luck with this very unusual project.

I think this is such a sensitive issue with some folks that I would check with the family who requested the cake and see what they feel it should say. They may not want it to "say" anything...just nicely decorated with chocolate frosting and covered strawberries...or something manly like that (I assume it is a man!). For an idea, see the cake at the below link.

Also, he may have hobbies or something they would rather showcase instead of a reminder of his failure.

While I think the 'get out of jail free' card is a cute idea, I am not sure I myself would want something like that for a relative in this situation.

Just my humble opinion (whatever THAT is worth! LOL!). icon_wink.gif

I agree with RitzyFritz....make SURE they want to reference the jail thing. Could be super sensitive issue or could be they want something funny. I would definitely check it out.

Let us know how it turns out!

I read you subject line and immedialtely thought of Monolpoly, too.

How about a bill of sale with "Debt to society" on the top and big red letters across it that says "PAID". "Welcome home____"

On the less humorous side....

Maybe a cake with a sunrise- "A fresh start" or "To a new beginning"

Please post a picture of what you decide!

Maybe it depends on the situation.... perhaps even the crime and length of stay - who knows. My cousin was in jail for several years and we had a huge party when he got out... my 90 year old Grandmother having come up with the idea.

My family is so low-key it's not even funny.... we rented a Hall and guess what?? The cops came because we were all too loud! It was hysterical.... we are bunch of rowdy hooligans I guess..... icon_redface.gif It was in Oregon so after talking to my Grandmother, the policemen then came in and sat down to watch us all do Karaoke icon_lol.gif ...... we are not the uptight kind, can you tell??

I suppose had it been a dreadful crime, violent or otherwise, it would have been a different story....

I had a similar situation, except that they were co-workers and not the family. They requested very specifically the Monopoly figure and especially wanted the file baked in the cake (you can see it in my photos). I was very nervous, but apparently it went over well. I agree with the other posters that maybe you should check with the family and see if this is something like what they had in mind. If they want something more serious, it may not be appropriate.

This is all so funny to me! Maybe I'm just naive, but I've never heard of someone getting a cake for finishing jail time... how IRONIC!!! icon_smile.gif

But hey, I'm all about forgiveness...no judgements here, I'm just amused.

LOVE the file comment...how hysterical!!! icon_smile.gif
Good luck with this one...anxious to see final pics!

If it were me, I'd probably do something with a picture of a house/home, and "Welcome home" on it, since you're not sure of the circumstances.

you gals are sooo funny. when i saw the title, i got this far "out of jail cake" and then thought "what!!!".

if it was something petty where he was in jail overnight or something then it might be funny but if it was a long time then maybe he wont appreciate a cake making fun of the time he was "away". I would check with the fam like the others said but i love the monopoly idea.

jstritt - HAHAHAHAA. That's cute. icon_lol.gif

Debbie28 - I agree. If he was in there for a long time then I would stay away from something that would most likely offend him.

Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

I love all of the humerous suggestions...but, if it were me I would think more of the "Welcome Home" cake. The family is probably wanting to celebrate him being home, not be reminded of WHY he was gone!

...BUT, you never can tell! They may like the humerous ideas as well, just ask! When I worked at the bakery I was once asked to do a cake for someone the family knew was about to go to jail! They wanted it to say "Don't drop the soap!"...truly shows it takes all kinds in this world!

You could do a book cake and write THE END OF THAT CHAPTER IN LIFE;

Or you could do a cake where 1/2 is a jail and the other half is a home then write down the GRASS IS NOT ALWAYS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE. Meaning he may think at the time it sounds like a good idea to break the law so he can have what he wants but then he finds out jail is not worth it.

Or just an empty cell with a sign hanging on the door saying something GONE FOR GOOD hanging on it.
