What part of making a cake do you hate?
For me - definitely making the icing. I hate to make icing. I hate it so much I told DH I was going to teach him how to make it so it would be done when I get home from work (he's retired so I think he should take on this chore - LOL). Can you tell I just made two batches of Chocolate Buttercream and now I'm very cranky
I'm with you! I hate making the icing! Cleaning up the mess comes in at a very close second!
#1 cleaning up mess
#2 making icing
#3 covering the cake boards (I hate this with a passion for some reason)
Definitely the clean up.... by the time I finally finish the cake, I'm too tired to do all the cleanup work.
After the hours and hours of baking time days ahead, I think it's the icing, too! I thought it was just me. But I can have all the cakes baked and ready to go, half filled and crumb coated, then bam--I'm out of icing.
So sift another 6 POUNDS of powdered sugar, beat up another double batch, clean up the fine powder dust that lands everywhere, clean the greasy mixer, etc.
THEN...continue on where I left off. I'm considering making the icing when I make the cakes, then freezing a ton of it ahead of time so I don't run out!
i dont mind making the icing; its the clean up. plus i wont let anyone else clean my stuff up for a few reasons. one i dont like anyone else having to clean up my mess and when i have to do alot of colors- i have a biiiiiiiiig mess lol. plus they dont get all the grease off my bags. and i need all the grease removed and the bags air dried. when anyone else touches them this doesn't happen. plus some how some way the kids end up losing the rings on my couplers. i spend more money on replacement rings and coupler sets then i do bags!
Definately clean up is Number 1 for me. The place looks like a disaster hit it. And I don't learn to clean up as I go along. Next would be icing. I coat my whole kitchen in 'snow' by the time I'm done. I hate cleaning that up.
I hate "cake disaster" dreams, and waking up in the middle of the night thinking about fallen cakes, dropped cakes, dry cakes, bulging layers....
I think I spend more time stressing than cleaning up!
The cleaning up is a pain, but at least you can do it at your own pace and nobody is going to complain if you drop a spatula!!
Cleaning up is my top pet peeve because the only dishwasher in my house are my two hands and I seem to be one of those people that needs to dirty every bowl and dish in the house!
In order: 1). WORRY-I worry WHAT IF all the time.
2). Baking
3). Icing
Clean up does not bother me as I C.A.I.G. (clean as I go.)
I cover the boards way in advance.
i try to clean up as i go but with the bigger cakes and the busier i get clean up becomes second to the cake lol. usualy its cause i have two teens and a hubby needing to run traffic from the livng room to their bedroom through the kitchen constantly (its the only way to get to the rest of the house.
they can wait all day long and not need the kitchen once till mom gets in there then poof zerooom beep beep (insert traffic sounds here)

Coloring fondant. Hands down. Booooring... Actually making the fondant runs a close second.
OK yes and maybe worrying: is this cake going to bake ok or will it come out under or overdone. I hate that there is no way to tell if the cake is any good until it is served!
I hate covering the boards and making the icing. In fact, I was get behind because I keep putting off the icing until the last minute. I also hate making MMF. I can't wait to start buying ready made fondant.
I don't mind cleaning up so much. It reminds me that I'm done and after that I can relax.
For me it would have to be cleaning the bags, tips and couplers. Then having to dry each and every one of them immediately in fear of the tips rusting.
I don't mind the cleaning much as I clean as I go. I don't mind making the icing but I HATE coloring the icing. To me that is a big mess. Now that I use Americolor mostly, it isn't quite as big of a mess.

Shopping - I have yet to find a store (online or nearby (and I live in NYC)) that have everything I need - so I end up going from store to store and ordering other stuff online.
Definately colouring fondant, especially if there are alot of colours. Clean up, and I dislike help from my 4 year old, which make twice as much work and clean-up.

Donnajf- I could not have said it better!! DITTO!!!
Clean up... though I rarely do that anymore (two teenage daughters who like their cell phones mom pays for)... and coloring icing... making cheesecake crusts... making cheesecake batter... Hmmm... baking in general. I love the decorating... it's the rest that bites. Hmmm... maybe I need to teach the teens to make batter, crusts, icing... etc???
putting cocoa thru a sieve...everything in close proximity gets covered in cocoa dust...ugh
secondly, torting chocolate cake...all those crumbs
third...cleaning up ...
But, other than that, I love it!!! (oh and the worry and stress of an important cake)
First would be sifting pounds of powdered sugar.
Second would be making the icing.
And a distant third is cleaning up.
making icing. i hate it with a passion. i try so hard to make it last so i dont need more. I even wait to buy PSugar so that i dont have to make it.
I would rather clean up then make icing.
i also get annoyed at leveling cakes.
i think i'm with a lot of people on this one..................................
cleaning up afterwards always gets to me....either that or tripping over nagging B****y kids when your trying to concentrate. Thats it!!!! , thats what really gets to me, naggin' kids!!!
ssshhh! don't tell anyone, but I HATE baking!
I love the decorating, I love making icing, I even tolerate the clean up, but I hate the baking part.
What I hate the most is sifting all the powder sugar cause it starts floating around and making everything white and the second is when someone shows up uninvited and of course at the worst of times and wants to watch you work. I don't like people watching, they make me mess up alot more than usual.
Even though I am new to all this.........I have come to realize that I am FANTASTIC at making an AWFUL HUGE mess in my kitchen.....whether I am making the frosting....frosting the cake...even baking it.....SO...My thing is the clean up........I hate it!!!!! Despise it!!!!! I am so tired by the time I am done with the decorating and assembling that I could care less about cleaning my kitchen. Would almost be worth the money I made on that particular cake to pay someone to come in and clean it for me..lol!
I hate having to stop in the middle if I run out of something, especially if it's just a LITTLE short .... just ONE more egg, just ONE more little 1/2 cup of milk. Fortunately, I have a walmart 3 minutes from my kitchen so it's not as bad as it could be.
But because I hate stopping in the middle, I do a lot of the little stuff ahead of time: cover all my boards before I even bake; have all my ingredients in assembly line order; I have anywhere from 5 to 8 batches of icing already made and in the acrylic food container with a lid, ready to go; trash can to the right of me for convenience; BC roses already made and dried so they are ready to go right on the cake at decorating time.
Clean up is definitely the next one! I stop after each process to totally clean before I go to the next step. Icing made ..... stop and clean as if I were done for the day. Cake batter mixed and sitting in the six pans ready to go in the oven .... stop and clean as if I am done for the day. I've found this kind of cleaning only takes about 15-20 minutes (sometimes less) so there is no big clean job when I'm totally pooped! (But I still hate doing it!)
