First, how do you transport a cake that is odd shaped? Like, I'm making another Space Shuttle cake this weekend. The "body" of the cake is a jelly roll, but it has wings and a top fin, plus rockets on the end.

Second, I plan to do all my cakes by delivery mainly because I live in a townhouse and I'm sure my Assoc. would not approve a home business if there were a lot of parking issues (we are each given two parking spaces) or traffic (not that I expect the world to come knockin' but the assoc. would want to safeguard against that, I suppose.)

So, if I'm driving, are the miles tax deductible even though it is personal vehicle? (I have a station wagon, so I can transport quite a bit if ever I needed to).

Thanks! I have another question for another post! LOL

For transporting the odd-shaped cake, maybe balls of parchment paper or masking tape under the wings/tail would help to stabilize them.

I just did a cake this past week and I used huge WADS of masking tape up under the cake plate to brace it in the box!

I'm no tax expert, by any means...BUT, from what I understand, everything related to delivery of your product is deductible, at a certain rate.

Even your house payments are deductible (certain percentage thereof), because you are preparing your wares there.

Ask your tax person--they should be able to advise you on these things!

Let us know how you did, and share pics of your cakes!

You have to keep a mileage record/log of beginning odometer reading and record each round trip miles with the date. This can support your mileage claim.

Deducting any home expenses requires you use that area/space 100% of the time. If you use your home kitchen, you may not be able to deduct much of your household expenses. Definitely consult an expert.
