Did You Ever Think, For A Minute, That You Would Be Able To.

make such beautiful cakes, when you first started this hobby.
I don't have any talent, not even in my baby finger, but when I look at all your beautiful cakes, I wonder if you were the same as me.
Will I ever be able to make a cake like the ones you are making???
In my dreams probably, but hopefully I can make them so that they look professional.
Oh man, i think the same thing! I make my lil cakes and then get all the raves and stuff. Then I look at the AMAZING ones here and think HA! I couldnt make those in 3 lifetimes! LOL Im all embarassed bout my photos but oh well.. only thing i can thinks is - make more.. you'll get better! But for some reason, people r starting to run when i say the words - doesnt cake sound good? LOL I've been trying the cookies and hafta say i think im better at those than the cakes. But, Im not one to give up so I'll keep making them and hope I get better... As you will too!
I agree, everyone's cakes are so gorgeous!!!!! I am embarrassed as well to post mine next to the beautiful ones on here!! Maybe one day!!
I totally agree Im very limited on my decorating confidences.
Family and friends say oh that looks good but they dont see these on here.
One day in my wildest dreams after I tackle begining I would love to learn gumpaste. Oh well ladies lets keep practicing and one day we can tell a newbi oh I remember those days.
Dumdungal- did you get the icing dilema solved? I went nutso but it did help me to always make a double batch. I think on single I put too much p.Sugar cuz mine was real stiff in fact at class I kept adding water as everyone else was practicing I felt like a real heel. Another classmate had great iced cake and she said she doubled it so she could just use whole bag of p sugar no measuring. It worked yeah!!!
I have been doing my kid's birthday cakes for 8 years, now, and it's just been in the last year that I've thought that with enough practice I may be able to make a little money at this. I've done tons of practice cakes and learned a lot off of this site and I think I've improved greatly!!!!
I used to be a little embarrased putting my photos on here, but then I realized that everyone has to start somewhere. I am proud of the cakes that I do. I'm no professional by any means, but I LOVE to do cakes and I think in time I may be able to consider myself a "professional"......I don't know.......10 years or so? lol.... anyway, as long as you love what you do, and you practice, anything is possible!
Oh please don't be embarrassed at all! Every one of us started right where you are too. We all had to learn and we all do it in a different way.
I too was leary about posting some of my first cakes because frankly I was very intimadated by seeing some of the masterpieces posted here.
Now I can't wait to post everything I do. ( not that mine are masterpieces by any means) It's just that I'm excited to share with fellow enthusiasts who obsess over cakes like I do!
Things I make now were nowhere in my capablities a year ago. I would have never attempted a stacked or tiered cake, let alone anything sculpted or 3D or a wedding cake! But the more you do it, the better you get and the more confident you feel. Plus it doesn't hurt one bit to get an ego boost from people who enjoy seeing and eating the cakes.
Keep at it!! It's a blast and we'll be right here to cheer you on!

I agree too........but then I look at photos of cakes I did a while ago.....and I'm like.......ok, I've improved LOL I think you get better when you start to look at everything as a potential cake!! LOL Like......I see different edible things....and I'm like.....man, if I ever need a door for something that would be great!! Or wow, if I need something that looks like a rope....this would work really well! Once you start seeing party napkins as a design idea for a cake!!! Look out!!!! (by the way....if you go to google images and type in party napkins...there really are some GREAT ideas for cake designs lol)
Your work looks fine to me, I've only posted a few pictures. I also feel like no one wants to look at my little cakes. LOL I just started decorating cakes in November of 2005.
I do have to say, in the first class I had to ask my instructor would I really be able to do that. (the cake on the wilton instruction book course I) I was amazed that I was able to do it after such a short time. Then came II and III and I did pretty well on those too. Now I am very happy when I accomplish something new.
I don't think I will ever be as good as most of the decortators on cake central!
We all have aspirations of being better. There's never been a day, not even one, when I thought that I was "there". "There" always moves ahead of me...like a carrot dangling in front of a mule!
Practice, practice, practice!!!! I know it is cliche, but it couldnt be more true! The more time you give to cake decorating, the better you will become, guaranteed!!!! And everyone doubts themselves once in awhile, I do it all the time!

This is too funny. I saw some Christmas wrapping paper today that I thought would make a great cake design.
"kHalstead" I love those gelatin flowers. Are the instructions on the website?
I look at some of the "newbie" work and wonder what school they went to for them to be so good already.
When I look at pictures of cakes, I always think I could never do that. But then I try out a cake and I think it is "okay". Then people who don't know any better think it is great. So as long as my family thinks it is great, then that's all that matters. But I wonder if they are lying so they don't hurt my feelings.
I don't think so, you know there are flaws because you know better and are more critical. They don't know what to look for.
My friends family and co-wokers think my work is great.

Here are the instructions..........you must try them!!! Seriously.....they're so easy!!! They are not impressive at all once you know how to make them LOL So simple.......I wanted to try them because I thought a cluster of them would look cool on a cake!!! Haven't put them on a cake yet though.......I actually still have those first ones I made.......I promised my mom she could have them because she thought they were so pretty....they still look exactlly the same too......and it's been months since I made them
I have been doing cakes for a long time and it's true..everyone has to start somewhere..and you guys are doing just great..keep up the good work and practice, practice, practice. You will get where you want to be I am sure.

Your two are so funny

Here is one for you, I have asked two different people at work to go to the color copier with me so I could copy their shirt! I liked the pattern and though it would make a great cake. "I have the copies in my "Feed the Eyes" art box that I keep scrapes for inspiration. "It's left over from art school."
People I work with think I am absolutely stark raving mad.
And I am! About cakes!!
Thanks KHalstead for the directions. I'll have to try it. For now they will go on my list of projects.

Now that's funny!!!!
Well, I finished my first decorating session last night and we learned an awful lot from our teacher, Laura. She is a professional in all ways and show us lots of enthusiasm to keep working if we make a mistake when decorating.
I've put a picture of MY FIRST CAKE in my Photo Album. It was fun to do and hopefully my decorating will improve and my cakes will look like all of yours. They are fantastic!!!
I enjoy the baking far more than the decorating but DD loves the decorating more than the baking. That's why all the cakes in our Gallery our her's. I do decorate and I know many techniques but, arthritis and carpal tunnel makes my decorating look like it belongs in the Kid's Gallery. I'm happy viewing the work of everyone else and seeing how you come along.

Wow, you should see some of the first cakes I did! And to think that I thought they were pretty good too!! I'm still pretty new to decorating, but I can see how I've come a long way with my skills and practice. There are still some techniques that I'm not very good at and probably will never be good at. I stick to what I do well and go with that. And then there are those cakes that no matter what you do, they seem doomed from the start.
Keep at it!
