I have been asked to make a cake for a fencing party. He wants a sword shaped cake. Since fencing swords are so think I cannot make the whold cake in this shape it will need to have a background in order to have enough cake. My problem is what material should I use in order to mold the sword. I've only used marzipan and fondant. Does anyone have any good ideas? I really don't want this to look stupid. Thanks for any suggestions.....

what about making the sword out of a dowel rod covered in fondant dusted with silver luster dust and then make the handle out of gumpaste! I'm assuming it's one of the long skinny fencing swords with the little ball on the end?? How about making a cute play on words.......since it's a fencing party.......decorate a sheet cake to look like a wooden fence.( corny huh? lol)...then lay the sword on that.........it would make it stand out too.

Doesn't the sport of fencing also use a shield or am I thinking of jousters. I like KHalstead's idea for the sword. You could do two and cross them on top of a sheet cake.

You could put the sword in a big stone and caption it....something like...fencing with this is a piece of cake....ok that's kinda corny but hey...it works for lots of cake lol.
