I have been open for about 6 weeks, this is not a storefront. I have done a few things marketing/promotion wise. I participated in a local charity auction (got like 2 orders from that), got in on some radio promos which is costing me a lot in product. I have met with the local wedding planners, joined the chamber of commerce, met with several local business people, and took samples around the city building. My grand opening is Thursday and several local officials, business people, and a rep from the university are supposed to be in attendance. I said all of this to give an idea of the networking and promoting I have done. Quite frankly, I am running out of money for this sort of thing and have tired of giving large donations with no response. Am I on the right track or have I gone about it wrong? The orders are coming but VERY slowly. Do I just need to be patient? Are there other things I should be doing? Whaddya'll think?

You may have already done this but, maybe talk to them about the wonderful things you can do for holiday gifts, or holiday parties. Let them know that they can start placing holiday orders now. Maybe have a holiday pricelist to give them too. Hope this helps, best of luck to you! icon_smile.gif

You must be patient........ You have done some very valuable advertising. There are definitely more things that can be done,.......but slow down...When I first went into business with a storefront, I had exhausted my resources with trying to get my name out there. It cost me tons, with free this and that and joining the c of c etc.... I was wanting to get tons of work and make lots of money...Well it doesn't work that way. My first day I made $30.00! I had spent hours making brownines, cookies, pastries, specialty cakes, decorated dummies, breads ets....I was exhausted and frustrated. As the days went by..... and the weeks....and I was still not doing that well. I knew that I had a good product, but just didn't have the orders.........and then one day, it changed....and one thing led to another, and finally I started getting repeat business, and more orders, and then more, until I had to get some help. I eventually sold my store front and decided to build another building and not do retail, there was really not enough money in it unless you do large orders, so I rebuilt, only do custom orders and am now in my 7th year. I strickly work by referrals, and only have my free listing with yellow pages, and a nice small sign on the highway. I do no advertising anymore, no freebies, no coupon books, no radio giveaways, dropped out of the chamber, and just do my thing. It took 4 years for me to turn a real profit, now everything is paid for, and I have more work sometimes then I can handle. I have expanded into catering and specialized cookies, sculpted cakes and have to bring in some troops on the large stuff. My point to all this is persistence, patience, and a burning desire to succeed. I work for myself. It has not been easy and we probably ate more beans then I cared to, but it has been worth the struggle, because I am free from having to account to anyone except myself. Stop spending your money, you have planted the seeds....... now give yourself time to sow..... Good Luck.

I agree with cupcake. I have a store front with another business that is suffering and I will close after the holidays. I have done al sorts of advertising. And chamber of commerce was one of them. And all I seem to do is pay out. Yes I have had customers but sometimes less is more. When I have had a big sale I put adds in paper, Posted signs in stores. But the thing people told me that brought them to my store was the floresent signs I posted on street corners. Like Garage Sale signs. They cost less. Adds cost about $20.00 for 2 days in paper. Signs on corners and stores about $5.00. DUH!! dunce.gif It took me how long to figure this out. KISS keep it simple sister. I can't keep up the debt so going for cakes, candles and more. At my home for now thumbs_up.gif

Thank you for your replies. Maybe I do need to take a step back and let it happen. This is just so nerve racking after making such an investment. Don't get me wrong, I didn't think it would happen overnight. I appreciate knowing your experiences.
