Well We our back in our Hotel room and I am spent! I took home two third place ribbons in semi pro division and missed a bronze certificate by 2/3 of a point icon_sad.gif

It just makes me more hungry for next yearicon_smile.gif

For anyone who was there it was the pink Faberge egg with pulled sugar leaves and pearls. All brown draping.

Congratulations to all that entered!

Back to Minnesota in the morning!

Congratulations, Moydear! I saw you there, but only during the awards when I could put your name with your face. I probably bumped into you a hundred times over the weekend without realizing it. icon_rolleyes.gif

I got a first place for my Special Techniques, a second for my polar bear cookies in Semi-Pro, and a Silver for my Symbols of Ireland wedding cake.

I am sooooooo tired. Anyone else stay at the Holiday Inn Select?? icon_mad.gif Someone in the room next to us set their alarm for 4:00 a.m. and started hammering something and talking real loud. I woke up then and was awake the rest of the night. And there were kids pulling the smoke alarms from 5:45 a.m. and still doing it when we left the hotel at 7:30. The hotel knew about the loud neighbors and the icon_evil.gif kids and gave us that night for free. I know it's not the hotel's fault, but man, we were so tired we could hardly enjoy the rest of the weekend.

I do want to say that the competition at the OSSAS was VERY high quality this year, and much harder to win than before due to the wonderful, wonderful entries that were there. We were so impressed with all the gorgeous things we saw. Everyone was so nice, too, as always. I got to meet three people from CC while I was there because they were kind enough to describe their cakes beforehand so I could find them. thumbs_up.gif

Well, I'm going to go try to get a nap 'cuz tonight I have to start fondant roses for next week's wedding cake.

Anyone else who was at the show want to tell us how you did?

I didn't do too badly this year. I won first place in Cakes for Men (leopard print with black mask), 2nd place for Special Techniques (spray of chrysanthemums with blue, black, and white feather), and 3rd in Tiered (golden brown autumn cake) in the Master's division. I also received 1st for my haunted barn gingerbread house.

For the wedding competition I got a silver. It was Twilight Over Tokyo with the red peacock, blue peonies, and black and red fans.

I did the craziest but most fun thing! I threw both tiered cakes away! icon_lol.gif
The wedding cake had been ruined by the weather and travel, so I took off the flowers and fans, and chucked the cake. It was great to get rid of it. I had worked really hard so you'd think I'd be upset. It was very liberating. The autumn cake had also been ruined so I chucked it too! Pictures were taken of that! icon_smile.gif

People were picking at my blue cake in the trash and one person took the cake board! icon_eek.gif When I threw away the autumn cake, a lady asked if she could have it. icon_confused.gif I said I didn't care, but that it was messed up because I had just shoved it into a trash can. She took it anyway! icon_lol.gif

My gingerbread barn was literally falling apart, so I was going to throw it away as well, but a man sitting with Daniel from Cal Java wanted it for his son for Halloween.

Before I chucked them, I did get pictures made by American Cake Decorating and Cal Java.

I think I made one person mad (I can't say the name), when I did this. I kept getting dirty looks. icon_smile.gif But it was HILARIOUS and FUN to chuck them, and I didn't have to haul them home and try to find a place to store them.

When I get the pictures from Cal Java, I'm going to put them on my web site. That might be a while. Daniel takes lots and lots of pictures.

I enjoyed seeing everyone there and the work was wonderful. Oh, and the winning cake was Kim Payne's with the spiral staircase. Rebecca Sutterby was runner up with a beautiful rose cake with a vase of roses on top.

I have to say I had an issue with the guy who made the Marie Antoinette cake getting silver. His had edible images, rhinestones, and hot glue strings all over it!! Some of us suspect the flowers were purchased as well. They looked like flowers we have all seen in ads and many businesses use them regularly. I was also told that he said he completed it in two weeks. icon_confused.gif The glue and the rhinestones should have disqualified it. However, the rules say that the cakes can be entered at the discretion of the director.

It was still a lot of fun and I did get interviewed by Food Network. I didn't place very well, so I probably won't be shown. Oh well.

I wish I would have known what everyone was going to enter! I walked around in amazement wondering who I was passing by that I might have chatted with on CC! We should have a CC breakfast or something next year! I didn't get to enter anything and barely made it because I had the flu all last week and was good enough to travel and make it there. By the time we got there I felt better, but was wishing I would have been able to bring something! I am the great procrastinator thought and the flu brought me down! ARGH!!!! I had entered the petit four competition and really loved the product I got to experiment with! The Holiday Inn Select was a bust for us! YUCK!!! We too were awkened by the alarm and told by 3 people pretty much too bad, it wasn't their fault, and our cieling above our tub was leaking some wierd looking liquid, that can't be good! But the show was fantastic! Can't wait til next year, probably will not stay at the Holiday Inn Select!

Michele, I threw away stuff, too! icon_biggrin.gif My sculpture and my cookies went in the trash. I seriously considered having my son or husband walk around with the sculpture and let people poke it. haha! Last year my stuff was damaged by spectators, but this year nothing was damaged, so I thought walking around and letting them poke a cake that was about to go in the trash would be a reward. Of course, though, I didn't do that.

One woman came up to me as I was taking down my wedding cake and said her elderly mother was from Dublin and was very impressed with my cake (Symbols of Ireland, Symbols of Love - the white cake with the violin and faeries). The woman said her mother asked her to tell me if she happened to see me that she loved the characterization and that she took pictures of it to send back home to Dublin. It was so sweet I almost teared up.

Marie Antoinette got a silver?!?!? icon_confused.gifthumbsdown.gif I'm sorry if that man happens to read this, but I don't think he should have gotten that. Way too many inedibles, and the flowers did look purchased.

I also think cakes like the free-standing horse aren't following the letter of the rules. If the legs are plastic, doesn't that mean it's more than "minimally" inedible? A whole third of it (belly downwards) is not cake. Hm. Plus some of us were not happy that it looked like the same one that got best of show in Austin.

Skinnycakelady, that's gross about your ceiling leaking! I know the problems we were having were not the hotel's fault (nor was it their fault that last year a truck took out an electrical transformer and wiped out power to the hotel) but our staying there seems to be jinxed. We'll be looking elsewhere next year.

P.S. - I learned something new at the Tulsa State Fair this year - - - fried zucchini ROCKS!!

Yes I stayed at the holiday inn once and never again!
I agree with the Marie cake---I will just say that because I lost a bronze by 2/3 of a point.GRRRRRR

I did drive back at 11:30 because we forgot my daughters cake. I realized at about Iowa that I also forgot my tree with sugar ornaments. Oh well it did not win! Now I hvae two red and two white ribbons. That blue still haunts me though!

Deanna I really truly believe that your horse should have placed -it was lovely!

Love all of you and so cannot wait for next year!

Thanks, Mary Ann. I liked my horse, too, but when they put that blue car in the correct division (it started out in the advanced but that was a mistake) I knew I was blown out of the water. The judges left a note on the horse "Board doesn't work with cake." It's the way it was in the book I got the idea from, but I guess the judges didn't see that book. icon_rolleyes.gif

I told my family that the woman who made the popcorn box cake last year said she lost her bronze by 2/3 of a point. My husband was like "WHAT?!" I thought your wedding cake was gorgeous and my family really liked it too. We watched it get photographed.

BTW, my family remembers the popcorn cake because we were looking at it last year and some woman came up and wondered if the butter was real and TRIED TO WIPE IT OFF! We were all going "Don't touch it!"

Goofy spectators. icon_biggrin.gif

Which cake was your daughter's?

Thanks so much-The judging was so across the board-I receved a 72, 65 and a 56 so it averaged to 64 1/3---Anyway!

I know Michele said someone tried to wipe the butter also!

I still have a long ways to go with cakes!

My daughter had the small square wallace and grommit cake-She took second!

It was interesting to see the cakes that all got silver. Blew my mind!

CONGRATULATIONS to all of you, your work is amazing!

I only guessed Deanna's items correctly (but that was from her clues icon_lol.gif ) I forgot my camera icon_mad.gificon_mad.gif so I cannot wait to see all the pictures and re-live my fun fun day!! Boy I wish I had been there when you were trashing your cakes, I could have used the snack for the drive home!

We were wondering about how that Marie Antoinette was allowed with stuff that even novice little me could tell shouldnt go on a cake: Wouldnt it be fun to get to grill the judges on their reasoning?

Cannot wait to see what you all do next year!

Anyone else going to post theirs??? Please?

MaryAnn, I didn't get to see your daughter's cake! Was it in the Children's area? We tried to go over there but they said we couldn't because they were photographing wedding cakes. Then we never made it back over there. I'd like to see a picture. I'm a HUGE Wallace and Gromit fan. Tell her I say congratulations!

Hey, Michele, I talked to you in line behind you last night waiting for the photographer I had my two kids with me that were making me a nervous wreck. Even though they KNOW not to touch peoples cakes they were starting to get a little squirrely. I was going to introduce myself but they just had me too flustered. Both my kids entered cakes but didn't win anything and were past the point of caring. I was disappointed not to have the chance to see all of the cakes, and look forward to the future when my kids are older and I get to do what I want! I wish I had seen that Marie Antoinette cake and now especially can't wait until get the pix up.

Moydear, did you take the class with Margaret Ford a couple of years ago? I think I may have met you there.

sillychick, don't worry about your kids. I was chucking most of the stuff anyway. I kept a few things. I didn't get pictures of a couple of things, so after that, they are getting tossed also. My stuff always seems to get damaged.

I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to formally meet. I do understand about the stress. That show stresses me out completely. I really like the smaller shows. They are much more relaxed and fun. The crowds are smaller, but much more courteous. Touching is not as much of a problem.

p.s. Before anyone asks, I'm not entering the wedding competition next year. I really have no interest in the theme and would not be able to make a cake that I would like. Hollywood is just not my thing.

Where is a good place to stay? Maybe the show organizers will be able to get a deal somewhere else! I need to start planning for next year! I really CAN'T WAIT!!!!! I have ideas swimming around in my head already! When does everyone start working on their projects? When do you wedding cake(ers) start your wedding cakes? Next week? lol. No, seriously!

So are there other shows around this area or do you travel for them?

Is the theme for next year Hollywood?? That's a bit odd. It must be hard to come up with fresh ideas.

Gee the only hotel I've ever stayed in around here is the Doubletree Warren Place and I think it's rather pricey. Were those hotels arranged through the show? That's really a shame to hear that you all had bad experiences, no sleep can sure take the fun out of things!

I do travel to other states for shows. The furthest I've been is Maryland. It was a blast! I usually go to one of the many shows in Texas. I've been to Kansas, and I'm going to start looking in other states. So many states come to Oklahoma, some of us here feel we should really support other states as well. Like I said, the smaller shows are really fun. The competition is just as steep, but the atmosphere is much more relaxed.

In March I actually get to be a judge for the Sugar Wonders Cake Club show in Texas! I'm so excited! It would be great to see some of you there. Don't worry, I'm a fair judge and inedible items and hot glue strings won't do well. icon_smile.gif

I may have the name of the theme wrong of "Hollywood", all I remember is hearing Kerry saying something about the glitz and glamor of the movies.

Congratulations to all who entered and to all who won!

Hollywood Glamor is the theme for next year's wedding cakes, that should be fun to see.

I heard the theme was Hollywood Glamour. Ugh. Not a fan of Hollywood, so my husband came up with a great idea should I happen to decide the wedding competition is worth all the travail to do it again. I'm thinking about it. I most assuredly am NOT staying at the Holiday Inn, no matter if they get a good rate for the cake show or not. I'm planning to save up and stay somewhere nice because next year's OSSAS will be the last one I'll be able to attend.

Michele, I'm so glad you'll be judging the Sugar Wonders Show! I know you'll do a great job for us. thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif
