Michele, do you think Janette might be willing to do a demo on working with armatures in cakes at the Sugar Wonders cake show in March? I know I'd love to see that done 'cuz I've never done it and would like to give it a try, and I'm sure the Club would be happy to see it, too. If you think she's interested, I'll have the person in charge of demonstrators send her the form to read.
Thanks again,
Deanna

I talked to Janette and she said she would be glad to do a demo, but not of the armature. The armatures take several days to complete and really cannot be made into a demo, especially since she does as much as possible to be edible. The armatures have to be built differently for this type of work.
Her web site is attached to my previous message, so you will be able to contact her through it. She just recently joined CC and I didn't think to ask what her user name is.
She is a great demonstrator. She's very funny and lively. I love her work in all areas and always have.
Thanks for your understanding on the explanation of the horse cake.
Michele
Michele, please let Janette know that she can PM me if she wants to, I'd love to be able to apologize for the misunderstanding "in person." Since her computer is down, I won't go to her website and try to get ahold of her there because she probably won't get my message for a while. I figure if you are talking to her today you might let her know I'm sorry I made an assumption without asking questions first. I'm learning not to do that, but notice I said learnING and not learnED.
We'd love to have her do a demo on whatever she thinks would be good to show. Maybe she could add something to her website (if she hasn't already, I haven't looked yet) about how those armatures are done. Or make a little pamphlet that we can buy at the cake show? I'd buy one. Oh, and in case anyone else out there is reading this, YOUR cookbook is great!
Deanna
Deanna,
Janette is okay with everything and she really is flattered that people think that she is using pre-made pieces. It means that she is doing a good job. Janette really is a nice person and a blast to be around.
She said people have asked for written instructions with drawings but that's just not one of her talents. She says she can't draw (I can't either) and that the instructions are long and somewhat difficult to understand. It's an in-person type thing. She does give a class on it at a cost of $1000. This is for a full class on sculpting. She provides everything. I can't remember how long the class is though. It sounds expensive, but considering that she provides ALL of the supplies, lunch, and even a place to stay if needed, it's a pretty good price. The entertainment alone would be worth the price.
Janette is willing to do a demo, she just doesn't know what yet. Right now, she is not feeling well, so she's not in the creative mode. She'll be back to normal soon and will probably have a great demo in mind. I'm hoping she will make a video for the Food Network as a contestant for her own show. It would be a hoot!
I will relay your apology to her. She really wasn't upset, she just wanted to set the record straight.
Thanks for caring.
Michele
Deanna,
I forgot to tell you thank you for your compliment on my book. I put a lot of work into it. Most of the recipes were in my head so it took quite a bit of thinking to get them on paper. I didn't realize how little I refer to recipes until I started on the book. Sometimes I think I must be nuts.
Michele
Michele, do you know how long Janette's class lasts? Or does she have them often? I think I remember her being in Houston?? Money is tight so I'd have to save up for it. Sounds good though.
I'll tell the person in charge of demo's to either get ahold of her or give me the paperwork to get to her.
I know you'll be judging at the Sugar Wonders show, but are you going to demo, too?
Deanna
To anyone interested.
Janette Pfertner has a book call
WEDDING CAKE COLLECTIONS "Variation on a theme"
It is a VERY good book that is a great addition to anyone collection.
I bought it at ICES and it is already one of my favs!

Deanna
I have not been asked to do a demo, probably because of my unpredictable health issues. I don't mind doing one, I just have no idea what it would be or what anyone would want to see.
I think Janette's class is 5 days, but I'm really not sure.

It is a great book and I'm not just saying that because she's a good friend. I'm even selling some for her. You can get them from either one of use for $20 plus S&H.
Michele
Me!! Me!!! I want a book! PM me where to send you a check. I didn't know she had a book out. It's good to know! She should be sure to bring them to Sugar Wonders to sell. (Ya think I could get it autographed??)
Michele, I'll mention that you're willing to do a demo and have someone get ahold of you about it, since you certainly seem well now to me. I love to hear stories of divine healing. {hug} If Janette's class is 5 days, $1k is a bargain, throw in some meals, and it's hard to pass up. I still have to save up for it, but I'd love to do it.
Jacque, I hear you'll be at the Sugar Wonders meeting tonight. We'll be glad to have you!
Deanna
Yep, I will be there! Can't wait...
I'll bet Janette will autograph a copy. She signed my copy when I picked it up at the convention.
I will bring the book with me tonight so you can look at it. You will see immediately why it is so invaluable---ingenious really!
See ya tonight!
Jacque
LOL! My hubby doesn't even want to know anymore. If I tell him I am going to the cake supply store, all he says is "Cha-Ching!"
An armature is the "skeleton" for a sculpted cake. It supports a cake that will be above the cake board. It's very specially made to hold cake, which is usually heavy after decorating it. It also has to be made to have as much cake as possible and as little inedible structures as possible.
Dowel rods, plumbing pipes and fittings (metal or plastic), wood, and other materials are used to make them. Of course, all of these things are thoroughly cleaned and made food safe.
I hope this helps.
Michele
Thanks Sugarflowers. That was quite helpful. Sounds like an armature is like the PVC thingy Bronwen was using for her Olive Oyl head on Cartoon Cakes on Sunday night.
That's exactly what Bronwen had used. I'm glad you saw the show. It helps to have a visual image.

Also Just a quick note. There is an envelope in each prize you took home. Take time to send a note of thanks to these wonderful people who give to this function! Yes some of the postage is to africa and the uk but it is the least we can do!
Does ANYONE have the name of the Satin Ice Rep that was on the
envelopes? My envelope for Satin Ice is missing and I would like to
get a thank you in the mail. I got the address off their home page, but just need the rep's name in which to address the card.
Thank you!
I do not know who the rep is-I would just send it to Satin Ice and they should know who it goes to.
Jacque, I was sure I had an envelope from Satin Ice, but I just checked and I don't. I thought I got one. Maybe it got in with some of the other stuff from the show that hasn't been unpacked yet. I guess do as Moydear says, just send it to Satin Ice in general, maybe put "donation thanks" in the bottom corner of the envelope or something, so they'll have a quicker time routing it to whoever is in charge of their generosity.
Deanna
Kevin O'Reilly is usually the person from Satin Ice that makes the donation. He is the person who formulated the product and is usually at the show demonstrating it. He was not able to be there this year due to several other obligations on the East Coast.
Hope this helps.
Michele
