I received a call yesterday from a fellow cake baker in my area..we both work out of Wake county, NC. She just recently learned that we are suppose to be collecting 1 % taxes on top of the 7% NC Taxes! They are filed with Wake County, not NC (just the 1%) So if you live in Wake County, you should visit http://www.wakegov.com/tax/businessproperty/preparedfoodbevtax.htm

We do fall under this tax law...I have confirmed it with my accountant. And they are auditing a number of bakers in our area!! So I urge you to take care of this asap. My friend has to pay back taxes for a number of years! I luckilly only have been "legal" since Febuary, so my back tax bill isn't too bad.

You then of course, need to start collecint 8% tax from your customers...

I live in this area also, and I know this is offof the topic, but I was wondering where y'all buy your supplies? I live so far from Michaels and AC Moore.

Hi Leslie! Sorry I have missed so many ICES meetings this summer..Sundays are my baking days, and bridal consultation days, and I just haven't been able to make any! Sigh sigh.

Let us know if it applies to Durham as well, so we can spread the word!

Are you talking about Cake decorating supplies or supplies in general?

I get all my flour, sugar, eggs, etc at the Cosco in Durham. That shouldn't be too bad for you, no? I just recently learned that if you show them your tax id, you can get a tax exempt on your purchases and save 2%. I haven't had a chance to try it yet..

As far as supplies, I buy most of mine online. I have an account with CK Products, Pfiel and Holing, Lucks and Bakery Crafts. I also have a couple of other places here and there, but thier prices are the best and I get really fast delivery..usually in 3-4 days.

There is also a great place in Clayton on Main Street that has a huge assortment of Wilton stuff....and Its worth the drive if you want to touch stuff. If I have a real emergency, I go to the Michaels at Streets of South point..the one at Crossroads in Cary is always out of stuff and they have an additude there! Is Streets of Southpint too far for you? About 45 minutes, no?

There is an ICES member, Teresa Crawford, who has a website and she stocks a lot of cake supplies. She is in High Point and I'm sure she would appreciate the business.
We've missed you at the meetings this summer! I won't be able to rejoin ICES until after my Baking and Pastry classes next year!! I'm so excited, a whole semester of learning everything about pastry!!

I'll be taking my baking and pastry classes at Chez Bay Gourmet here in Durham. Check out their website at www.chezbaygourmet.com. They are offering career classes and I'm so excited. By the way Teresa Crawford's website is www.crawfordcreations.com for cake supplies as well as classes.

Thank you Loriemoms, for all your great help!!

Is the Michaels at SouthPoint better then the one out at NewHope Commons?

What is the name of the shop in Clayton? Do you or anybody have the address?

I noticed today that the Micheal's at Brier Creek is offering a Gumpaste Flower Making class (4 sessions). I don't know what the cost is but I thought that Wilton was supposed to offer that class next winter.

Hi ladies, I too am from NC. Harnett Co. This may be off topic, but I was hoping that with you all being from NC I would have a better chance of getting pushed in the right direction.

I am currently baking out of my home for family and friends and referrals made by them. I would like to become liscensed after the first of the year. Can any of you tell me where to find the requirements to become liscensed in NC. I have had no luck in finding anything. Thank you in advance.

-Melissa
