Hi folks..............need to vent about my "crashed" helicopter cake! I actually cried over this one. My son is an AME working for a helicopter company, so for his 24th bd, I wanted to make a helicopter sitting on a helipad. Since he still lives at home, to keep it secret, I had to work on it when he wasn't here, & hide it when he was (& that WAS a chore!). Anyway, the day before his bd, he tells me he has to go out of town & won't be back until the day after his bd. So, GREAT I think,,,,I have an extra day to work on his cake! (btw, I also work full time as a nurse, so all this has to be done after work). So, the day of his bd, he calls at 6PM to tell us they're taking off for home & will be here in 2 hours! YIKES, still don't have the cake together! So, I take the helicopter part of the cake out of my hiding place, & wouldn't you know it,,,,the gumpaste I had covered it in (for stability) cracked off the whole tail section of the cake - taking the tail router with it. I told myself to calm down, its not the end of the world for there to be no tail router. So I re-iced that section of the cake in bc., make my windows out of rice paper, spray half the plane a different colour so it's 2-tone, ice the helipad & write "BEWARE keep 24' away (son's age). Now it's time to place the helicopter on the pad..........CRASH...the skids under the copter buckle, the gumpaste broke away & the cake landed up on its side, on the pad, wiping out all the writing! That's when I started to cry. I have 30 min. before he lands! Weelll, good ol' hubby, comes up with a plan to give me an extra 30 min. & said "You can do it, hon." Well, I sort of did it. My helicopter is minus skids, a tail router, has numerous dents & cracked windows, but at least it's sitting up-right, & I got the writing back on the pad. A true crashed helicopter!! My son had a good laugh over it though, & Mom has a few more grey hairs. Hope his cake isn't an omen! Thanks for letting me vent. Will post a picture of my crashed helicopter when I get the film developed.

Girl...I am SO sorry....I know how you feel exactly! When it rains it pours! I am trying to save a VERY important wedding cake as we speak! I am doing a Hollywood wedding and the RBC foiled on me somehow and is a disaster..the wedding is tomorrow and I am about to go and tear it all apart and cover it in real fondant ( they finally decided to compromise taste so it will look great for the pics! I have never had my RBC turn out so badly! I am truly ashamed of this cake! And it is the most important one to date ( for me). I am glad you were able to pull it off

Thanks KayDay. I'm not so sure I "pulled it off", but I sure wish you luck with YOUR cake. When making for family, it's not so bad if you goof...but when you're making one for someone else, esp. for a wedding, you REALLY want it to be perfect. GOOD LUCK!!!

Glad you were able to pull it off. I'm sure your son was just as happy that you thought to do a helicopter cake.
